How to Properly Store and Care for Books: Tips and Tricks

Understanding how to store books to preserve their beauty and condition. Learn how to avoid damage from sunlight, dust and high humidity.

Always present in every, and completely every, apartment. Most often they are people, and they are completely different - criminals and detectives, children and their parents, mysterious strangers and mysterious gentlemen. Sometimes there are animals and fictional creatures, and sometimes even aliens! It all depends on the preferences of the inhabitants of the apartment. And you have them in your apartment too. Guess what we're talking about? Of course, about heroes and characters of books - after all, there is not a single house in which there would not be, even a small, but a bookshelf. Today we will explore how to properly store books, where it can be done, and where it is not worth it, as well as understand what to do if there are a lot of books, and space for them - extremely limited.

What is the fear of books

Books are selective about where they stay. Quite seriously: they don't like it "too hot" or "too cold". And if the humidity level exceeds the acceptable value, the pages start to undulate. In addition, they have a bad habit of collecting dust. It is this feature that causes a lot of problems to the owners, starting with cleaning and ending with the occurrence of allergic reactions. Let's list all the factors that negatively affect the conditions for storing books in the house.

Fear #1. Direct sunlight

Books are susceptible to fading from sunlight - it's easy to see this by simply looking at the covers and pages of books that have been stored near a window during the summer: the cover color becomes less bright and the pages take on a yellowish tint. It's interesting to note that libraries almost never have shelving near windows. In addition, most bookstores prefer to use artificial lighting and enclosed spaces.

However, the sun is not the only factor that can affect the safety and condition of books. Humidity also plays an important role. High humidity can promote mold and paper decay, while excessively dry air can cause pages to dry out and crack.

Special attention should also be paid to dust, which is another unpleasant enemy of books. A dusty environment leads to accumulation of dust on the pages, which can cause irritation while reading and lead to allergic reactions in readers. Therefore, it is advisable to clean bookshelves and covers regularly to keep books in the best condition.

Also, the quality of the materials used to make books plays an important role in their longevity. High quality paper and sturdy bindings ensure longer life of the books.

To keep your books in perfect condition, it is advisable to follow a few simple rules. Firstly, the ideal place to store books is a cool and dry room with low humidity. Secondly, books should be kept in an upright position on the shelves to avoid deformation. It is also recommended to use special bookmarks to prevent pages from being damaged while reading.

Fear #2. Dust

Without a doubt, dust is an essential companion of our daily life, but there are ways to reduce its amount. In addition, we can apply some new methods to ensure a clean and comfortable home. Let's take a closer look at how to deal with dust and supplement these tips with some interesting and useful additions.

Use a humidifier: When the air in your apartment is too dry, dust becomes more mobile and easily rises into the air when you move. Installing a humidifier will help keep dust on surfaces and prevent it from moving around in the air. Humidifiers also help maintain optimal humidity levels for health and comfort.

Humidifiers work on the principle of humidifying dry indoor air. They are usually equipped with special filters that trap dust and other allergens. Thus, in addition to reducing dust, humidifiers contribute to cleaner air, especially useful for asthmatics and people with allergies.

  • Practice wet mopping every day. When you mop floors and surfaces with a damp cloth or mop, you are picking up dust and keeping it on you rather than spreading it through the air. Regular damp wiping also helps reduce dust buildup on surfaces. Using microfiber cloths and mops when wet mopping can effectively collect dust and dirt. Microfiber has tiny fibers that trap even the smallest dust particles without spreading them across surfaces. It is also advisable to use floor-safe cleaning products to avoid the buildup of harmful chemicals.
  • Keep books in locked storage. Books, like other items, can be sources of dust in your home. Keeping them in a closed cabinet or glassed-in sideboard will help reduce the amount of dust that settles on their pages. This will also help keep the books in good condition and protect them from direct sunlight. For long-term preservation of books, it is recommended to use special bookshelves with stable attachments that prevent slipping and dust accumulation. Separate plastic or cardboard covers can be useful to protect book covers from dust and damage.
  • Damp clean other surfaces regularly. Dust can accumulate on a variety of surfaces in the home, including furniture, televisions, computers, and even wall art. Wipe these surfaces regularly with a damp cloth or special cleaning products to get rid of dust and create a more hygienic environment. When cleaning electronics, use special screen cleaners that do not contain abrasives. They will help remove dust and fingerprints without damaging the screen surface.

In addition to these methods, it's also a good idea to regularly change and clean the filters in vacuum cleaners and air conditioners, as well as keep the vents and air ducts in your home clean. Remember, regular cleanliness and dust control contribute to a healthier and more comfortable environment for you and your family.

Fear #3. Dampness

The presence of dust in our daily lives is unavoidable, but there are ways to minimize its presence. Noting the importance of dust in our environment, we can consider additional methods and strategies to combat it. Let's look at some effective techniques to improve the air quality in your home and provide a healthier and more comfortable environment.

  • Maintain optimal humidity. Balanced indoor humidity levels play an important role in dust control. In a too dry atmosphere, dust easily rises into the air and spreads throughout the room. On the other hand, excessive humidity promotes the formation of mold and fungal colonies. The ideal humidity level is approximately 40-50%. To achieve and maintain this level, it is recommended to use humidifiers or dehumidifiers depending on the current condition of the air in your home. Humidifiers help increase humidity, especially during the winter when heating systems tend to make the air too dry. Dehumidifiers, on the other hand, are effective in removing excessive indoor humidity, especially in humid climates. Determine your humidification or dehumidification needs and choose the right unit to ensure optimal humidity levels.
  • Choose furniture and finishes carefully. When selecting furniture and finishes, pay attention to their properties, especially in terms of dust collection and retention. Avoid furniture with uneven surfaces, heavy drapes or heavily draped curtains, which can easily become dusty and difficult to clean. Favor smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces and materials that don't attract dust. When choosing textiles, such as rugs and upholstery, it's a good idea to pay attention to the materials' anti-static or hypoallergenic properties. Such materials have the ability to reduce dust collection and limit the breeding of allergens, which contributes to a healthier indoor environment.
  • Organize proper storage. One source of dust can be items that are stored on open shelves or in plain sight. It is recommended to store items such as books, collections or decorative items in closed cabinets or sideboards with closed doors. This will help prevent dust from settling on these items and make cleaning easier. When storing books, it is also advisable to use book moisture-wicking bags to prevent condensation and moisture buildup of books, especially in humid climates. These moisture-wicking bags usually contain silica gel granules that absorb excess moisture and help maintain a dry and safe environment for storing books.
  • Perform regular cleaning and maintenance. To control dust, you need to pay attention to regular housekeeping. Vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, and wipe down surfaces with a damp cloth, including tables, shelves, and other horizontal surfaces. Don't forget vents, air conditioner grills and other places where dust can accumulate. Also, change the filters in your vacuum cleaner and air conditioner regularly to improve their efficiency. When cleaning, remember that using electrostatic or microfiber rags can greatly improve dust collection. These rags effectively hold dust and prevent it from dispersing into the air.

In addition to these methods, it's worth considering that careful ventilation of rooms, regular replacement of filters in heating and air conditioning systems, and the use of air purifiers can significantly help reduce the concentration of dust in your home. Regular and systematic use of these measures will help ensure a cleaner and healthier atmosphere for you and your family.

Fear #4. Pets

Owning a pet is a wonderful and joyful adventure, but some precautions may be necessary to protect your favorite books from possible damage. Below are tips for protecting your books from pets and reducing possible negative consequences.

  • Place books out of your pet's reach. One way to prevent damage to books is to place them on shelves or tables that your pet cannot access. You may need to hang shelves higher or use closed cabinets to store books. This will help protect the books from accidental damage caused by your pet's curiosity. If your pet does have access to books, it is recommended that you provide them with enough toys and entertainment items to divert their attention away from the books. Regular exercise and training can also help your pet recognize boundaries and rules around books and other objects.
  • Use protective covers or bags. If you have a pet that is prone to chewing or damaging books, you may consider using protective covers or book bags. These extra covers can help prevent damage to the book cover or pages when playing or accidentally causing damage. There are a wide variety of protective book covers on the market made of different materials, including plastic, fabric, or clear film. Choose the cover that best suits your needs and will provide reliable protection from potential damage.
  • Create a safe area for the pet. In case the pet is young or requires special attention, creating a safe zone in your home can be a helpful solution. This can be a designated area where the pet can be supervised and safe, such as a playroom with toys and scratching posts for cats or a fenced-in area for a puppy. This will help prevent potential book damage and protect them from the pet.It is important to realize that it takes time and patience to train and educate a pet. Regular exercise and encouraging positive behavior will help your pet understand that books are sacred and are not meant to be played with or damaged.

Fear #5. Carelessness

Apart from pets, owners themselves can also unintentionally cause damage to their books. It is important to keep in mind some basic rules and guidelines to prevent damage to books and keep them in good condition.

  • Avoid places with high humidity. The kitchen and bathroom are humid places, so it is not recommended to keep or store books in these areas. Moisture can negatively affect the condition of books, causing mold, stains or warped pages. It is recommended that you choose dry and well-ventilated areas for storing books. If you need to consult the book while cooking, it is recommended to use a book stand or electronic versions of cooking recipes to avoid accidental food or moisture on the paper pages.
  • A special consideration when storing outdoors. If you have a balcony or outdoor patio, it is not advisable to leave books there without proper protection. Exposure to weather, moisture, sunlight and dust can damage book pages and covers. It is better to store books indoors or use special containers or tight bags to protect them from unfavorable external conditions. If you like to read outdoors, it is recommended to use electronic book reading devices, such as e-books or tablets, which are easy to carry and protect from unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Careful handling and storage. It is important to keep books in safe places where they are not exposed to accidental damage. It is not advisable to throw books in a pile on the floor or on an unsuitable surface. Books should be stored upright on shelves or in special bookcases to prevent warping or damage. In addition to vertical storage, it is recommended to use closed bookcases or glazed sideboards to protect books from dust, direct sunlight, and other potentially negative factors.
  • Take care of books during transportation. If you plan to transport your books or take them with you on a trip, it is important to keep them well protected from potential damage. Use special book bags or pack them in soft material to prevent them from bumping or being pressured during transportation. If you have a large collection of books, you may also consider digitizing important copies. This will allow you to have electronic copies of your favorite books and provide additional protection from potential damage.

Following these guidelines will help you keep your books in good condition and extend their lifespan. Take care of your books so that they will always remain a source of inspiration and knowledge.

How to best organize your book storage system at home

So, we have already discussed how books need to be handled with care. Now, let's look at some interesting ways to organize your book storage so that you can do it properly and stylishly.

  1. Specialty bookcases. If you have a small room, you can avoid using bulky cabinets by installing rails and shelves. Such an open shelving unit up to the ceiling will allow you to accommodate all your books.
  2. Classic bookcases. This is a time-honored way of storing books: a closed cabinet at the bottom and several shelves on top. Such cabinets are often part of sets and are still popular today.
  3. Stylish shelving units. They will not only help to store books, but also divide the space in the room or studio. Racks can serve as a functional and decorative element of the interior.
  4. Convenient nightstands. If you have few books, a nightstand near the bed or chair in the living room can be a stylish solution. Such a small book keeper will be a great addition to your interior.
  5. Organizers. If you prefer to keep your books on your desk, organizers can be your best friend. They will help you organize your books by category or alphabetically, making them easily accessible.
  6. Minimalism in fashion: boxes. Some people prefer to live without furniture, in which case you can store books in stylish boxes. This is a convenient and modern solution that will suit any interior.
  7. Creative solutions: drawers, suitcases and baskets. If you're looking for a way to incorporate an interesting item into your interior while maintaining functionality, consider using crates, suitcases or baskets to store your books. These are unique and stylish accessories that will add personality to your room.

Types of book storage and their advantages and disadvantages

  1. Closed storage: This method offers storage of books in closed cabinets or drawers. The plus side is that the books are protected from dust and other external influences. However, the disadvantage of closed storage is that you can't see the books immediately and may lose the sense of their presence. If you prefer this method of storage, it is recommended that you air out your bookcases regularly and keep the inside tidy.
  2. Open storage: This method allows you to place your books on open shelves or racks. One of the advantages of open storage is that it is easy to find the book you need, and the books become part of the interior and give it a cozy feel. However, open shelves require regular maintenance and cleaning as they are prone to dust accumulation and can create a sense of clutter if the books are not arranged neatly.
  3. Corner storage: This unusual storage method allows you to use the corners of the room to place your books. One of the advantages of corner storage is that it makes efficient use of space and saves space in the room. However, if the corner is located near a window, you should be aware that dust and sunlight can have a negative impact on the books. To protect against dust, it is recommended to wipe books regularly and install special protective films on windows.
  4. Storage around the doorway: This method of storage involves using the space around the doorway to place books. One of the advantages of such storage is the original design and saving space in the room. However, it should be taken into account that rearranging books can be difficult due to the peculiarities of the arrangement of shelves around the door.
  5. Non-standard storage: For example, storing books under the stairs. This unusual storage method offers the use of unfamiliar places to store books. One of the advantages of this kind of storage is the efficient use of space, especially when space is scarce. However, you should be aware that depending on the chosen location, there may be disadvantages, for example, the pantry may be highly dusty and the mezzanine may have a specific odor. When choosing a non-standard storage space, it is recommended to ensure good ventilation and regular book care.

If you need to put your books away temporarily, where can you put them?

Where to place books in case of renovations, moving, lack of space or temporary storage? Let's look at the different options:

  1. Warehouse Rental. In case you have a large number of books and need long-term storage, you can seek the services of renting a warehouse or storage facility. Such specialized facilities will provide proper storage conditions and protection from external influences.
  2. Self storage facility services. This is a new popular solution that allows you to rent a small customized storage unit. You control your own access to it and can store your books safely.
  3. Borrowing from friends or family. If you have trusted people who are willing to give you some space to store your books, this can be a great temporary solution. Be grateful and handle your books with care.
  4. Library or book club. If you have books that you aren't currently using but don't want to get rid of, you can offer them as donations to local libraries or book clubs. This way, you can share your books with others and keep them accessible.
  5. Virtual storage. In the digital age, there are various platforms and services for virtual book storage. You can create a digital library by digitally uploading your books to cloud services or use specialized e-book reader apps.
  6. Specialized storage boxes. If you want to keep physical copies of your books but are temporarily not using them, you can use specialized storage boxes. They will provide protection from dust and moisture and allow you to organize your books compactly.
  7. Craft or decorative use. If you have artistic abilities or a desire to fulfill your fantasy, you can create unique bookshelves, racks or even furniture, integrating books into the interior of your home or office.

It's important to remember that when storing books, you should consider the environmental conditions to avoid damaging the materials. Proper ventilation, protection from dust and moisture, and proper organization will help keep your books in perfect condition.

Keep in mind that each book storage case requires a customized approach. Choose the most suitable option and give your books the space they deserve so that they continue to bring you joy and value.

How special storage warehouses in Georgia transport books

When it comes to storing books in large quantities, it's important to consider not only their preservation, but also the efficiency of packaging and transportation. Simply throwing books into a box is not the best solution, especially if you care about their condition and covers. To ensure the reliability and protection of books, it is recommended to tape the bottoms of boxes and organize the box itself so that there is some space at the top. This will prevent the books from being "pressed down" and possible damage to the covers.

If you are transporting books with other items, it is important not to mix them with food, drinks or liquids to avoid the risk of spills and damage to the books. It is also advisable to avoid placing boxes of books one on top of the other, especially if they are books with decorated covers. In such cases, it is advisable to pack them separately using stretch wrap and bubble wrap, providing additional protection.

Proper labeling of each box of books is also important. It should be labeled with a description of the contents so that if a particular book needs to be urgently removed from the stored items, it can be easily found and delivered. Labeling boxes is one way to keep your books organized and easily accessible.

In addition, when you use a storage service in Georgia, you get a convenient personal account that can be accessed through a website or mobile app. This virtual storage allows you to monitor and manage your belongings. You can see a complete list of the items you have deposited and mark them for return if necessary. You also have the option to additionally deposit items to your existing storage. All of this provides convenience and flexibility in managing your stored books.

Choosing a storage service in Georgia, such as a Tbilisi storage facility or other specialized storage facilities, ensures that your books are not only safe, but also conveniently managed. This allows you to focus on other tasks, knowing that your valuable books are in good hands and available at your convenience.
