The most beautiful monastery complexes in Georgia. The monastery complex of Ubisi.
The monastery complex of Ubisi consists of the Church of St. George, a residential four-storey tower, from the ruins of the fence. The walls of the cathedral are not full of too much ornament, everything is restrained and stylish. Special attention should be paid to the frescoes of the fourteenth century. This painting is a fusion of Georgian and Byzantine styles.
The Ubisi monastery complex is located 160 kilometers west of Tbilisi, on the left side of the central highway of the Kharagauli district.
It consists of the Church of St. George (founded in the IX century by the disciples of Grigol Khandzteli - Christopher and Theodore), of a residential four-story tower (an inscription in ancient Georgian in the temple testifies that the tower was erected in 1141 by the first vizier of the Georgian kingdom Svimon), of the ruins of the fence and an extension of the XVI century.
The cathedral and the tower are built of shell stone, without unnecessary ornaments. There are inscriptions on the walls. The main attraction of Ubisi is the fresco painting of the XIV century, made by the artist Damian. These frescoes present a brilliant composition of all Christian holidays: the Annunciation, Palm Sunday, the Crucifixion of Christ, Sunday, Epiphany, etc. Among the frescoes, the frescoes depicting St. George and the "Last Supper" are distinguished. The painting of this temple is a synthesis of Georgian and Byzantine (art of the Paleologian era) styles.
