Where the tsars lived in Georgia. The royal residences are the Gegut Palace and Okros Chardakhi.
The only ruins of the royal palace that have survived to our time are Geghuti. The main part of the palace consisted of a hall in which galleries were located, and had a high dome. The next residence of the kings is Okros Chardakhi. There used to be many buildings on its territory: a church, large and small houses, a dining room.
Geguchi the only royal palace and royal residence that have survived to this day, albeit in the form of ruins. It is 7 km away. to the south of Kutaisi, on the bank of the Rioni River. The palace occupies an area of 2000 m2. In the VIII-X centuries.
Geghuti was a dacha - "hunting" - house of the Abkhazian tsars, and since the XI century - the residence of the Georgian tsars. According to Kartlis tskhovreba ("The Life of Georgia"), four-tiered royal palaces- chambers were built here in the XII century. The main part of the palace was a hall with four galleries, crowned with a 14-meter dome, and on both sides of the hall there were utility rooms (bedroom, coin room, treasury, bath ...). To the east of the palace there is a church (XIII-XIV centuries).
Okros Chardakhi was the residence of the Imeretian kings. The residence is located on the right bank of the Rioni River, in the center of Kutaisi, between modern bridges: the Rustaveli Bridge and the White Bridge. The first information about the royal residence belongs to European travelers (the Italian Ambrose Contarinni - XV century and the Russian ambassadors - Tolochanov and Ivlev - XVII century.) There were several buildings on the territory of the residence: the court church of St. George, a large house, a small house and a dining room. In the center of the courtyard, under the large plane trees that have come down to our days, there was a chardakh - a throne with a canopy on four pillars. A bell tower was built into the wall of the fence, as well as towers intended for the royal treasury and guards.
The royal residence was repeatedly damaged in the XVII century . By the 19th century, of all the buildings of the residence, the small house, the tsar's church and the bell tower were preserved.
Only a small house has survived to our time. The first floor, designed for flood protection, is open on all sides with arched openings. The great hall of the second floor is decorated with battle scenes of the XVI-XVII centuries. The building was remodeled in the XIX century, and the present look was given to it in the 1960s.
