Until the middle of the 17th century, Anchiskhati Cathedral had a different name, it was renamed due to the church's acquisition of the miraculous icon of the Savior of Anchi. The icon was made by the master of gold coinage Beka Opizari. It is currently kept in the National Museum of Georgia.
The sights of Georgia always amaze tourists with the beauty of nature and monuments of ancient culture. One of these attractions is Anchiskhati Cathedral. If you think that you can see on vacation with the whole family or with friends, this place is one of the best options.
The church, located in Old Tbilisi on Ioanna Shavteli Street, got its modern name thanks to the icon of the Savior of Anchi, which was delivered from the south of Georgia in 1664. Later, the miraculous icon, made by the master of gold minting Beka Opizari, was transferred to the National Georgian Museum, where it is kept to this day.
Before that, the ancient Georgian temple was called the Nativity of the Theotokos in honor of the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Anchiskhati Cathedral is also known for the fact that Georgian princes themselves were brought up within its walls. In 1755, the Georgian tsar Irakli II initiated the creation of a folk school and a theological seminary at the church.
They taught not only the word of God and church history, but also subjects such as physics, arithmetic, Georgian, grammar, rhetoric and logic.
The architecture of Anchiskhati Cathedral.
The temple is a three-nave basilica, which, unfortunately, was destroyed and rebuilt several times due to the wars with the Turkish and Persian armies. The cathedral building is built in the form of a rectangle, which is divided into three parts inside by two rows of columns, and the semicircular apses are references to the antiquity of the cathedral.
During the restoration, the walls of the building were replaced from stone to brick. The temple has three separate entrances from the south, north and west, however, only the latter is currently open.
All entrances are decorated with powerful wooden doors with a truly Georgian ornament, and although the original decoration of the church has changed since the last restoration, the original motifs of the decorations are clearly visible.
Especially valuable is the preserved relief of the image of the Balnur cross and the angel in the western laying of the facade of the building, as well as frescoes of the 17th century decorating the walls of the cathedral from the inside. Also, a brick bell tower was added to the western part of the church in 1675 by Catholicos Domenti. On both sides of the entrance there are decorative niches located on the second floor.
In conclusion, it is important to note that by visiting these undoubtedly the most beautiful places of Georgia, we are imbued with the true cultural and spiritual atmosphere of this powerful state.
