The interesting forms of the monastery are fascinating!
Bethany is a cross-domed temple, located 90 km southwest of the city of Tbilisi. This building is located in the forest gorge of Vera on the right bank of the river of the same name with the gorge. The temple was founded at the turn of the XII-XIII centuries, but restoration work took place in it in the second half of the XIX century.
This monument of Georgian architecture has a rectangular shape, the dome of the monastery rises significantly above the ground and is slightly shifted to the east. The room in front of the southern entrance is blocked by a star-shaped vault. The exterior of the structure is lined with carved stone, but the walls and domes are made of stone, which indicates later restoration work.
There is an interesting image on the walls of the apse of the altar: personified vices hold scrolls with Georgian inscriptions. The painting of the temple is entirely covered with plaster. The wall on the northern part of the structure is dedicated to scenes of miracles of the Savior, and on the southern - scenes of the Old Testament. Analyzing the parts of the painting on the western wall, it can be assumed that the composition of the Doomsday was depicted on it.
Along with religious scenes, portraits occupy a separate place on the walls of the building. Among them there are such historical figures as George III, Queen Tamara. All the images were made during the reign of Queen Tamara, when George-Lasha was appointed regent. Historians refer to the year 1207. Next to Bethany there is a small hall church, founded in 1196.
This place is also known for the service of Father George and Father John, who were later canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church.
The Betania Monastery will be interesting to visit for those who are interested in the architecture and history of Georgia. Since it is of historical value, which the residents of Tbilisi and nearby settlements are proud of.
