Alaverdi monastery complex. Introduction to ancient Georgian architecture. Architecture and history of the cathedral.
The Alaverdi Cathedral and Monastery is one of the most famous and largest churches in Georgia. The monastic complex survives from the time of ancient architecture and despite significant damage, the exterior of the temple has retained its original form.
Where is it located?
Both of these historical sites are located near the village of Alaverdi, in the Kakheti region of the Alazani Valley.
How do you get here?
You can get to Alaverdi from two cities at once - Telavi, which is only 20 kilometers away, and Akhmeta. The length of the way is 17 kilometers.
But unfortunately, you can't get there by public transport, because the monastery is 10 kilometers away from the highway. The best way is to rent a car or take a tour.
History of Alaverdi
The monastery was founded by Joseph of Alaverdi in the 6th century. Until the 17th century Alaverdi was a men's monastery, but later a women's monastery was founded here as well, where members of the royal family sometimes lived.
On the territory of the monastery there are many structures: the grape museum, where more than five hundred different varieties of grapes are grown, wineries, baths, the bell tower and the bishop's palace, all of which constitute a large complex.
Architecture of the Cathedral
Despite significant damage, the temple has retained its original form. Inside the temple you can see various ancient church relics of Georgia: frescoes, paintings and many icons depicting saints.
The monastery has a rather unusual cruciform shape, which is called - trikonkh.
Alaverdi monastery is considered to be the center of Georgian script. Here, in the 11th century, was rewritten the Alaverdi Gospel. Nowadays the monastery keeps a lot of ancient manuscripts.
If you're planning to go on vacation to Georgia, then we advise you to visit the Alaverdi Cathedral. This place is one of the most significant spiritual structures on the territory of Georgia. It is here where you can truly enjoy all the beauty of ancient Georgian architecture.
