📜 History of the monastery: traces of centuries in every stone

As soon as you set foot on the land of Abkhazia, do not rush to judge the temple buildings of the Caucasus. The Dranda Cathedral of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not just a temple, it is a whole chapter in the book of history, hidden among the centuries-old stones. The construction of this holy place dates back to approximately the 6th-7th centuries, and it still raises many questions among historians and researchers.

This is one of the most ancient temples in the region. However, its history can be called truly unique. Initially, its dedication remains unknown, and the first mentions of it were made by the Italian traveler Giovanni Luca Chiavari in 1630. He called it the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. But the mysteries do not end there! ⏳

During the existence of the Dranda diocese (from the 10th century to the end of the 17th century), the temple served as the residence of the bishops of the "drandels", and, despite this, very few documents have survived about it. In 1637, the temple was destroyed by the Turks, who were trying to spread Islam in Abkhazia. This led to a long period of oblivion of the temple, and many chronicles about it were lost. 🌍

🌿 The temple was abandoned and served as a place for cattle, and fig trees grew on its walls, intertwined with grape vines. M. Seleznev wrote about this in the 19th century, describing the cathedral as a place unlike any other building beyond the Caucasus. But even in such desolation, the temple retained its strength, and on its walls one could see the remains of ancient frescoes. These frescoes testify to the former beauty of the temple, however, over time they were lost due to restorations and destruction.

💫 In 1860, archaeologist Dmitry Bakradze, having visited the cathedral, wrote about the frescoes that adorned the walls. Among them are the images of the Savior, Archangel Michael and the composition "Transfiguration". But despite this, the paintings were destroyed due to time and the intervention of restorers, who were unable to preserve them in their original form.

Not everyone knows, but... 🤔

📅 In the 19th century, several restorations were undertaken. The first of them in 1868-1869 did not yield significant results, but in 1881, by order of the Holy Synod, a monastery was established at the temple, and the church itself was consecrated in honor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1883, another restoration was carried out, which seriously changed the appearance of the cathedral, including the replacement of its original vaults and the addition of new elements.

✨After the revolution and in Soviet times, an administrative building and even a prison were built here. However, in 1978, restorers eliminated many of these later changes, and the temple returned to its authentic appearance. Since then, a new life for the cathedral began: in 2011, the government of Abkhazia transferred the temple to the Orthodox Church for perpetual use.

The Dranda Monastery itself has survived many historical eras - from its heyday to the difficult years of oblivion. Closed in 1928 by order of the Soviet government, it continues to live through the grandeur of the Assumption Cathedral. 🌟

🏗️ Architectural secrets that will blow your mind

The Dranda Cathedral amazes with its architectural uniqueness and non-conformity with the usual canons. Despite the cross-domed structure, it hides many strange and surprising features. The main one is the absence of a dome drum. At first glance, it seems that it is there, but it is just an imitation. Inside the cathedral, only a dome with 16 windows is visible - a phenomenon that is not found in other churches in Transcaucasia.

But that's not all! The eastern chambers of the cathedral are not only square, but also have niches, which is absolutely uncharacteristic for churches of that time. But the western chambers, on the contrary, are round, like in the Avan Cathedral, but this style has also not been used for a long time.

All these architectural innovations make you think that the Dranda Cathedral is not just a temple, but a real architectural experiment. Perhaps it was built by Byzantine masters, and its style still remains a mystery to researchers and travelers. 🏛️

What else makes the Dormition Dranda Monastery so unusual?

🎨 Remains of frescoes: once the walls of the temple were completely covered with frescoes, but time and careless restorations have done their job. Only fragments remain, from which one can try to restore paintings depicting the Savior and the saints. But despite this, the cathedral still retains an atmosphere of antiquity and grandeur.

💎 Marble tombs: in the altar part of the temple there are two marble tombs, which remain undeciphered by archaeologists to this day. These tombs are part of the interior decoration of the temple and attract much attention from researchers.

🌟 Special shrines: one of the main shrines of the temple is the myrrh-streaming icon of the great martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki, which attracts pilgrims from all over the Caucasus. This icon is considered miraculous, and many believers come here with the hope of healing and fulfillment of cherished desires.

🏰 What is the Dranda Monastery like today?

Today, the monastery complex is being actively restored thanks to the work of many people coming from all over the region and other countries. The monastery buildings, which were abandoned and gradually deteriorated, are now being brought back to life thanks to the workers. These people, putting their strength and soul into restoration, are recreating not only the physical beauty of Dranda, but also reviving the spiritual heritage of this sacred place. 🛠️

💫 The temple has received considerable attention in recent decades. Its ancient walls, which had lost their former splendor, have been restored and now shine with snow-white purity. The cathedral is open to visitors, and guided tours are held here regularly. Nearby amenities include a restaurant, which, although not an architectural gem, is popular among pilgrims.

🍴 Dranda Restaurant: Built next to the temple, this restaurant offers not only traditional Abkhaz cuisine, but also amenities for those who come on long pilgrimage trips. It is a pleasant place to rest and recuperate after visiting the cathedral.

💡 Secrets of the stability of the dome: The dome of the cathedral itself is a real miracle of engineering. This huge dome, despite its age and visually vulnerable structure, still stands strong, despite its enormity. Byzantine craftsmen may have known some secret technologies that allowed it to stand for more than 1,500 years without collapsing, despite the structural difficulties.

🏛️ No iconostasis, but with unique elements: There is no traditional iconostasis inside the cathedral, but instead a wooden altar partition in the Georgian style is installed. This gives the interior of the cathedral a special atmosphere of simplicity and peace.

🪙Historical value: In 2011, Abkhazia issued commemorative coins in honor of the historical significance of the cathedral. The reverse of these coins depicts various monuments of Abkhazia, including the Dormition Cathedral of the Dranda Monastery. This coin has become a symbol of the historical value and cultural heritage of the country.
