Kvemo Bolnisi Church: 6th-Century St George Basilica in Georgia

Located in Kvemo Kartli, Georgia's westernmost region, is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Church of St. George. This distinction is well-deserved, as the church is also considered one of Georgia's most beautiful places.

This medieval church, dedicated to Saint George, the patron saint of all believers in the country, is a complex of three basilicas, each topped by a dome. The church's interior is decorated with ornamentation, and in front of the altar is an iconostasis that once held an icon of Saint George, framed in silver and embellished with precious stones. This icon was later moved to the Georgian Art Museum, which also houses many interesting exhibits. There's definitely something to see in Georgia.

Georgia's landmarks include architectural monuments and ancient traditions. The locals honor and preserve the memory of their ancestors, a fact that is evident in the care they take of the Church of Saint George. Built in the 5th century AD, the church has always been a magnet for monks and pilgrims. In the 20th century, it was abandoned, and services ceased. But at the beginning of the 2000s, thanks to the work of local authorities and representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the building's facades and walls once again acquired their original appearance.
