History.
Tbilisi district Avlabari is one of the oldest parts of the city. Archaeologists have confirmed with their findings that people lived here in the I - II millennia of our era.
Previously, the area was also called “Isani” in the 11th-13th centuries. Specifically, the modern name officially began to be used only in the 14th century. Avlabari was also divided into two districts - Sogdebili and Metekhi. “Bar” - in the old language meant fence or trench. And the word “Havle" is the neighborhood. From this we can conclude that Avlabari means suburb.
Avlabari grew very rapidly in the 17th century, especially outside, where ordinary people lived, because princes and kings settled inside Avlabar. In addition to the Georgian people, representatives of Greeks, Persians and Armenians lived in the area, most of the people were engaged in handicrafts and agriculture.
According to the chronicles of Plato and Ioseliani, in the 15th century there were palaces of kings Guria and Samegrelo in Avlabari. And in the second half of the 17th century, Queen Darejani ordered to build a palace in the form of an Avlabari fence. The main streets in this area ran parallel to the Metekhi rock and in general the appearance of the buildings was very neat. There was a market for local residents on the main street.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Avlabar district became the main focus of protests by Tbilisi workers and their illegal printing house was located here.
