Над городом возвышается цепь высоких гор, сливающаяся с Кавказским хребтом. Почти на протяжении всего года на вершинах этих гор лежит снег. Снежный покров и теплый морской воздух создаёт здесь необычный контраст. На возвышенном участке морского побережья – живописный парк.
В эпоху расцвета Колхидского царства здесь было много соборов, башен и крепостей. Одна из этих надписей в Успенском соборе предупреждает о приближении в 1066 году косматой звезды – кометы Галлеи.
