Ekvtime Takaishvili, curator of Georgian antiquities, was born in the village of Likhauri. In 1883 he graduated from the classical gymnasium in Kutaisi with a silver medal. He received his higher education at the historical-philological faculty of St. Petersburg University (specializing in Greek-Latin languages). There he defended his scientific degree. After returning to Georgia, he taught Greek and Latin, history and geography in the Tbilisi Georgian Gymnasium for the nobility and the Classical Gymnasium. Ekvtime Takaishvili made a tremendous contribution to the cause of discovery. Reading, dating and putting into scientific circulation the most ancient Georgian manuscripts.
In 1892, Ekvtime Takaishvili helped Ilya Chavchavadze in the reburial of Nikoloz Baratashvili's body from Gvidji to Tbilisi. The Literacy Society published the first complete collection of Nikoloz Baratashvili's works, of which Ekvtime Takaishvili was the editor. In 1894-1904 he directed the Georgian Gymnasium for the nobility and during the same years conducted archaeological research and excavations in Lechkhumi, Svaneti and Vani. In 1911 the Russian Imperial Archaeological Commission awarded Ekvtime Takaishvili the Grand Gold Medal. In 1902-1910 he traveled to South Georgia (Turkish Georgia).
Extremely important results of this expedition Ekvtime Takaishvili published in the second half of the 1930s in Paris. In 1907-1921 he founded and led the Georgian Historical Ethnographic Society.

Ekvtime Takaishvili was one of the founders of the National Democratic Party of Georgia and in 1919-1921 served as deputy chairman of the Constituent Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Georgia. After Sovietization of Georgia he spent 1921-1045 years in exile. The Menshevik government that fled the country took with them the entire treasury and historical valuables, which were placed under the responsibility and custody of Ekvtima Takaishvili. Only thanks to his loyalty to his country and his dedication the entire treasure was returned to Georgia in 1945.
After the return of Ektime Takayishvili to Soviet Georgia he was elected professor at Tbilisi State University, and in 1946 he became an academician of the Academy of Sciences. He was active in pedagogical and scientific activities. In Georgia Ekvtima Takayishvili lived at 6 Vashlovani Street, where today his memorial museum is located. The museum was opened in 2003.
On October 17, 2002 the Georgian Orthodox Church numbered Ekvtime Takahishvili among the blessed and his house was transformed into a place of worship.
