Ancient 11th century bridge in Adjara
The arched bridge, named after Queen Tamara, who is associated with the golden age of Georgian history, was built across the Adzharistskali River. It was built using unworked stones and rock fragments, and lime mortar was used to join the structure.
The bridge is built over the river at a height of 6 meters without rails and steps, it has one span. The total length of the construction is 30 meters and its width is 2.5 meters.
Adjara is seismically dangerous region, but it was the arch model that allowed the landmark to remain in perfect condition and survive several earthquakes. In southwestern Georgia there are about 20 wooden bridges of the same design, but located in the village of Makhuntseti is the largest.
The last time it was restored in 2008, during the repair the structure was strengthened and cleaned of moss and plants. In summer, tourists are offered a boat ride over the bridge or try the national cuisine in the cafe.
Makhuntseti Falls: coolness on a hot day
The majestic 30-meter waterfall of Makhuntseti is located 500 meters from the ancient bridge of Queen Tamara. Although in summer the waterfall is not as powerful as in spring, when the water flow increases significantly, it is still one of the largest in Adjara.
Legend has it that if you bathe in the clearest cool water, which forms a lake at the bottom of the gorge, you can gain strength and youth. Covered with dense greenery, mountain ranges protect the area from sunlight, so even in the heat of the heat here is cool and fresh.
To see the waterfall, you need to leave your car in the parking lot near the trail, and then follow it to the wooden gate. Nearby, there are farm stands with products and an observation deck.
