Vashlovani is a protected national park of Georgia, located near the Azerbaijani border. The unique protected area will amaze you with its variety of wildlife: semi-deserts, pine forests, volcanoes and ridges. It's as if you will find yourself in "little" Africa, in the middle of Georgia.
The protected areas of Vashlovani are located in the south-east of Georgia, almost next to the Azerbaijani border, at an altitude of up to 900 meters above sea level, between the Iori and Alazani rivers. This area includes the Vashlovansky State Reserve, a National Park and three natural monuments, namely: the Orlinsky Gorge, the Alazani Thicket and the Takhti-Tepa mud volcanoes.
The total area of the National Park is 35,292 hectares, and the territory of the reserve itself is 10,143 hectares. If you believe the legend, then this reserve got its name from plants that are often found in this area, namely from Turpentine or Pistachio trees, they are also often compared with apple trees ("Vashli" translates as apple, apple tree).
Nature conservation areas of Vashlovani they are famous for many historical and cultural monuments. If you are planning to visit Vashlovani, then the following list of local attractions is for you: the Church of St. Elia, the fortress city in Dedoplistskaro-Hornabuji of the 6th century, the cave complex of Dedoplistskaro, the Church of Amagleb or Ascension, the ruins of the archaeological monument of Kambisen, which are about 5000 years old, the Archaeological Center in the village of Tavkaro, the Pirosmani Museum in the village of Mirzaani, Bodbe and Hirsa monasteries.
Archaeologists and scientists have also discovered old settlements and ruins of ancient colonies of human civilization, church and fortifications here.
