Batumi Botanical Garden in Georgia, what to see in Batumi, where to go, Park D'alfons
To visit a famous resort and not see the most beautiful place in Batumi is a waste of time. Find out how the country house of a Russian industrialist turned into a national treasure of Georgia from our article. The Madloba directory will always help tourists find the most fascinating places to travel.
The directorate of the botanical garden is located in a country house that belonged to the Russian industrialist Pavel Tatarinov.
The Green Cape is one of the most beautiful places on the Adjara coast. Historically, this place was called the "bird isthmus". The name "Green Cape" is due to the Russian summer residents, who in the second half of the nineteenth century began to build summer houses here.
After the establishment of Soviet power, most of these buildings were converted into sanatoriums. Since these houses were located in a mountain range, for the convenience of vacationers, a cable car was stretched from the sanatoriums to the beach.
The Batumi Botanical Garden, which occupies an area of 110 hectares, rises above the beach with small pebbles and clear sea water.
Plants of various species are collected here, which are located in nine photogeographic departments (Australian, New Zealand, Himalayan, East Asian, North American, South American, Mexican, Mediterranean departments). In addition, the garden accommodates upper, middle and seaside parks, experimental and collection areas, yards for tropical plants.
The foundations for the creation of the botanical garden were laid at the end of the nineteenth century by the French horticulturist and decorator Mikhail D'alfons, who had a dacha here. Initially, he laid out a magnificent park around his house with various relief forms and plants unusual for that time: oleanders, palm trees, cypresses, cedars, olives. Currently, the Parc D'alfons is part of the botanical garden and is called the "Lower Park".
In 1885-1889, Mikhail D'alfons was the chief gardener of Batumi. He was also the first head of the arrangement of Batumi Boulevard. His contemporaries called him "the good genius of the Batumi embankment". And grateful descendants erected a monument to him on the boulevard he created.
