The city of Telavi is full of a variety of interesting architectural monuments, one of them is the Telavi History Museum. The museum houses a rich collection of memorabilia of King Irakli the Second, as well as a sarcophagus of the early feudal era, a collection of tableware, military weapons, chain mail and other materials that convey the history of Telavi.
The city of Telavi was the capital of the Kakheti kingdom in the first quarter of the 11th century. The center of the city is represented by the architectural complex of Telavi Palace, called "Fortress of the Lord", which was the residence of the kings of Kakheti, including King Irakli II in the XVII-XVIII centuries. In 1927 it became the home of the museum complex. In the front square of the museum in the early 1980s was installed carved sculptor Merab Berdzenishvili monument to King Irakli II.
The museum is located in several rooms of the palace of King Irakli II. The museum complex, titled "The Fortress of the Master," includes: "The Palace of the King of Kahow" (built in 1884-1886), churches of the royal court, the remains of the building of the philosophical and theological school founded by Irakli II in the 50s of the 18th century, the royal bathhouse and the tunnel built in the palace, unique gates on the east and west sides.
In addition to the memorial items of King Irakli II, the museum keeps numismatic material, a sarcophagus of the early feudal era, chain mail, a collection of small household utensils of the XVII-XIX centuries, weapons of war, a collection of clothes of Khevsur. The art gallery holds 187 exhibits donated to the museum from the honest collection of Ketevan Iashvili. Among them are works of fine art of Dutch, French, German and Russian schools (I. Aivazovsky, A. Kramskoy and other artists of the Peredvizhniki period), samples of small plastics as well as works of Georgian artists (E. Akhvlediani, L. Gudiashvili, J. Khutsishvili and others). In addition to collections of archaeology, ethnography, numismatics, textiles, manuscripts and fine arts, the museum has a scientific library with a book fund of 5000 books, as well as the photo fund (Alexander Roinishvili, Dmitry Ermakov, Sharkanov, Barkalaya, Sosnov, Tor, Simonov and other photographers), reflecting the beautiful views of Telavi, as well as the life of people, with more than 7000 photos.
