The oldest museum in Georgia. Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia.
The oldest Georgian museum named after Simon Janashia was established in the middle of the nineteenth century. The museum's funds are truly the richest. It houses a variety of archaeological collections, exhibits that are several million years old, elements of industry and agriculture of ancient inhabitants, collections of doors and much more.
The most important and oldest museum of Georgia was established in 1852 on the basis of the Caucasian Museum. The project of the building belongs to the architect N. Neprintsev, and the architecture of the facade belongs to N. Severov.
To date, the richest collections of the museum contain first-class exhibits reflecting the nature, history, art and material culture of not only Georgia, but also the Caucasus and the Middle East, the number of which exceeds one and a half million units. Among them are the stereological material dated 1.8 million years ago of the oldest inhabitants of Eurasia (hominids) and their images restored in the scientific centers of Europe (“Zezva” and Mzia”).
Archaeological collections — from ancient times to the end of antiquity, materials reflecting urban life in the Middle Ages, industry and agriculture, ethnographic and numismatic collections, geological, botanical and zoological funds, a rare collection of epigraphy, collections of wooden doors, tools, metal utensils, etc. A special place is occupied by fine samples of gold jewelry, which are stored in the museum's safe-deposit box.
