The museum houses memorial items belonging to the founder of the new scientific pedagogy and children's literature in Georgia, publicist, writer and public figure Yakov Gogebashvili (1840-1912), as well as household and ethnographic material; book collection, including the first editions of his works and literary works; photo and documentary material: samples of fine art, paintings by Elena Akhvlediani and other artists.
Yakov Gogebashvili compiled the first book for students to read and the alphabet of the Georgian language in 1865, and in 1876 he wrote the book "Grandfather Ena" (Native language), which played a major role in the development and formation of a new literary Georgian language.
The museum of Yakov Gogebashvili houses memorial objects and archive; office furniture, a sofa with an Empire-style armchair, a mirror made of crystal, a set of Gogebashvili's table, memorial dishes made of crystal and porcelain "Saks", a table lamp, by the light of which, as they say, he wrote "Grandfather En". The archive of Yakov Gogebashvili contains various journalistic and personal letters, as well as his will to the Georgian public.
Of the printed publications, the first editions of "Grandfather En" and the lead letters for the "Russian Word" compiled for the printing house by Gogebashvili himself should be particularly noted.
His house-museum was opened in 1958. For many years, the native language festival "Yakoboba" has been held in the village of Variani in the Gori district.
