The history of Batumi
The ancient city, which was named Batus, was mentioned by Aristotle in his writings. Later, archaeologists found that the first people landed on the territory of Batumi in the 1-2 century BC. The chronology of the settlement begins 2.5 thousand years ago.
The territory with the same name was recorded by the thinkers of the Middle Ages. The word "Batus" is translated from the ancient Georgian dialect as "deep" or "depth". Most likely, this is due to the depth of the seabed near the port.
Later, from the 5th to the 15th century, the settlement was called Batomi. At first it was part of the Georgian National Unity, but after a few centuries the Megrelian princes came to power. In the 16th century, the shores of the Black Sea were captured by the Ottoman Khans. Their reign lasted just over three centuries.
In 1878, Russian and Georgian troops united to liberate the territory of Batumi. Thus, the settlement passed into the power of the Russians, was named Batu and for about ten years was a liberated trading port. Thanks to this, the resort began to grow and develop.
By the beginning of the First World War, the situation had changed. The Ottomans again seized Georgian lands. And in 1920 Batu was captured by the British Kingdom. With the advent of socialism in the Caucasus, Georgian territory was finally freed from enemy oppression.
In the 20th century Abkhazia became an autonomous republic, part of the Georgian state. But the confrontation between the authorities was in full swing. Because of this, the Georgian-Abkhaz armed conflict occurred in 1992 - 1993. As a result, the conflict was resolved in this way: Abkhazia separated and remained unrecognized.

The border between Georgia and Abkhazia runs along the Igur River. The land border between the two countries stretches along the Kodori Valley. The geographical location of Batumi is attributed to the Kakhaber lowland, which has a lunar shape. The total area of the resort town is 65 km.
