The Birtvisi Fortress, one of the most important historical structures and the most beautiful places in Georgia.
Birtvisi, an ancient landmark of Georgia, is a complex of buildings.
If you are looking for something to see in Georgia, this is the place to start.
The Birtvisi Fortress is one of those monuments that were not just built just in case, but really had great importance and played an important role in the history of the country.
Sights of Georgia are scattered everywhere, so do not forget to write down the coordinates.
Location: Kvemo Kartli, Algeti River gorge, northeast of Tetritskaro.
Looking at the location of the fortress, it becomes clear why it was considered impregnable. This is because there was probably no better place to defend.
The walls somehow magically flow into the rock, on top of which the structure is located.
Moreover, the architecture of the fortress blends in so well with the surrounding landscape that it is barely noticeable.
When construction began, the workers did not rely solely on the natural inaccessibility of the site, but worked to reinforce all the points that aroused suspicion. Therefore, no place was left without a protective wall to repel a possible attack.
For even greater security, an observation tower was built on the approach to the slope. It was called "Stubborn."
But the fortress had to exist somehow in peacetime as well. Therefore, walking around the territory you can come across former residential houses, farm buildings and even water reservoirs.
By the way, the name of one of the owners is mentioned in historical documents - it is the Baratashvili family, which belonged to the feudal estate.
By the way, speaking of the history of the fortress, the first mention of it appears in the 11th century. At that time, two Eristavis (Georgian noble title), Liparit and Kartli, attacked the Emir of Tbilisi, taking from him this fortress.
In the 15th century the fortress was taken by Timer Leng VIII. He fired catapults at the fortress for a long time, and when suddenly the silence came, it turned out that the crawlers penetrated into the fortress. It was a bloody night. Even those Georgians who managed to survive were executed afterwards.
Nevertheless, despite a couple of defeats, Birtvisi Fortress retained its unassailable status until the 18th century.
We would also add that there is a special grace inherent in it which has remained to this day. Perhaps this is what makes it possible to call it part of the list of "the most beautiful places in Georgia.
