The largest village of Tusheti, which is also the administrative center of the region, is called Omalo and is divided into two parts : Old and New Omalo. From the Old Omalo founded in the XVIII century, people began to move lower and populate the flat areas.
So the “young” part of the city was formed - the New Omalo. This village is located in the Akhmet municipality in the direction of Kakheti, as mentioned above, is the largest village in this area.
Previously, the village was formed near the fortress, that is, these buildings were the center of the village. But over time, when a New Omalo began to form, the towers lost their central role in the formation of the settlement and began to be used only as a shelter from enemies during an attack.
To date, several towers have been preserved, one of which houses an ethnographic museum. Here you can see the household and military weapons of Tusheti.
Omalo is also famous for its healing mineral waters, which are characteristic of the entire Tusheti region. The main occupation of the locals is shepherding. In honor of this, the national holiday “Shepherd's Day” or in another way “Tushetoba” is held annually.
It takes place in the second half of summer, since the 70s of the last century, in Old Omalo near the fortresses of Keselo. The holiday is fun: traditional Tushet games and solemn awarding of shepherds are held.
The largest village of Tusheti is located between Bolshoy Kavkasioni and the Tusheti ridge. On November 7, 2006, by order of the President of Georgia, Old Omalo was declared an immovable cultural monument of national significance.
