Active recreation in Goderdzi⬇️
Georgia is a beautiful mountainous country with gorges and passes. Today we will talk about one of the inaccessible, but important passes. To get from Akhaltsikhe in Batumi, you need to overcome the Goderdzi pass. The Trans-Hajar highway passes here. Although this road can hardly be called a highway.
Terrain
The Goderdzi Pass is not the only way to get from Akhaltsikhe to Batumi. There is another road that is much safer, but for tourists this pass is considered more interesting, beautiful and extreme.
At the templeZarzma the road begins along the pass, it runs through the villages of Khulo and Shuakhevi. Having overcome all the distance, you will find yourself in the mountainous Adjara.
The whole way lies through the mountains, and here you will see such fascinating mountain landscapes that all the difficulties and irregularities of the pass will be forgotten. The Goderdzi Pass is not inferior in its beauty the most beautiful places in Georgia. Its highest point is located at an altitude of 2025 meters above sea level.
Road condition
The condition of the road through the Goderdzi Pass leaves much to be desired. Those who are used to moving comfortably, it is better to choose another way. To get to Adjara as comfortably as possible through the Goderdzi pass, you need to choose the right transport and choose a day with good weather.
From Batumi to the pass, the travel time is at least two hours on a relatively flat road covered with asphalt. After Khulo, a dirt embankment begins and you will have to overcome difficulties for an hour and a half to Goderdzi, although now the road has become less extreme, there are no large potholes and pits, as before. After passing Goderdzi, you will again get on an asphalt road and quickly get to Beshumi.
It is worth remembering that in adverse weather conditions, the road may be blocked, as there are many mountain rivers along the way, and there is a possibility of a mudslide.
Transport
Locals from the end of spring to September drive along this road even in ordinary passenger cars. In dry summer weather, you can, in principle, drive any car, but we must not forget that numerous holes and potholes can damage the suspension of the car. For more, it is better to choose an all-wheel drive car.
In addition to your own transport or rented transport, there are other ways to overcome the Goderdzi Pass.
- minibus or bus from Batumi or Akhaltsikhe;
- hitchhiking. This method is unreliable, since in these places you can simply not wait for a passing car;
- you can get to the pass by bike, but of course it will not be possible to overcome the pass itself.
Travel time
The distance from Batumi to Khulo is 85 kilometers. Asphalt has recently appeared here and you can get there in two hours. There are a lot of beautiful photo locations along the way that you won't want to drive past without stopping, so the travel time will increase significantly.
On a warm, fine day, you can overcome the pass in 3-4 hours. But that's if you don't stop. In winter, it will take twice as much time to travel. The Goderdzi Pass does not allow cars to accelerate. Often the set travel time does not correspond to reality. Especially if you stop and take photos of mountain landscapes.
Climate
Locals do not complain about the cold. Winters are mild here and it is impossible even for lovers of hiking to freeze. Hiking in the mountains begins in spring, during the melting of snow.
The humid and rather hot summer attracts residents of the resort of Batumi and tourists who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Summer, smoothly turning into a warm autumn, creates a cozy atmosphere in these places. The harvest period, as well as possible, conveys the whole flavor of Georgia.
Natural and architectural monuments
Georgia is a country of sights, ancient structures and nature of extraordinary beauty. Traveling through the Goderdzi Pass, you will see many unusual structures, temples and bridges, settlements and lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Among all that you can visit along the way, several special places deserve special attention:
- Monastery Zarzma — дthe oldest monastery of Javakheti, which can be seen from the highway. The temple itself has the name Transfiguration, and Zarzma is the name of the village where the monastery stands.
- Goderdzi forest is a unique ancient stone forest. It is located near the Jinjo River right in the gorge. You will not find such forests anywhere else, it is the only one of its kind. In its place was once a wild tropical palm grove, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption 25 million years ago.
Green Lake near Goderdzi. It has magnetism and a magical atmosphere. The lake has a green color, that's why it is named that way. It is believed that the lake is of volcanic origin. Its bottom is strewn with sharp boulders, and the water does not warm up well even in extreme heat. Another feature of this lake is that there are no living creatures in it at all. But the water is so clean that you can drink it.
In the mountains there is an inconspicuous Kueda village, which is famous for its sights. There are as many as five ancient fortresses near it: Tsivasulskaya, Gulabi, Sagoreti, Kavianskaya and Zendidskaya. Also in its vicinity you can see the stone arch bridges of Dandolo, Mahuntset, Mitsis and Jamala. The village is also known for having its own museum.
Mahuntseti Waterfall — this is a thirty-meter beautiful Ajara waterfall. The water falling from a height is very clean and warm enough.
Not far from the waterfall you will find the arched bridge of Queen Tamara. There are more than two dozen such bridges in Adjara, but this one is the largest. It is about 900 years old, but it is still durable.
Seven kilometers from Goderdzi there is a summer mountain resort town Beshumi. It is famous for the purest healing air and attracts a lot of tourists in the summer. In bad weather and winter, access to the city is difficult, and sometimes there is no access at all.
The Dandalo Arch bridge, spanning the Acharistskali River, is famous throughout the district. The stone structure of the Middle Ages is very picturesque. Among the dense greenery, the place seems fabulous and very exotic.
Hulo
This high-altitude village is not very large in area, but it is quite picturesque and is a tourist point. A thousand and a little people live here. With the onset of winter, the number increases due to those who return here from the highlands. There are mosques in the village, and the majority of the population are Muslims. This was formed quite a long time ago as a result of the fact that this area was taken by the Turks. But there is also the Orthodox monastery of Schalta.
The infrastructure of the village is not developed, two bank branches and several shops are all that you will find here. Although there is also a museum, which the locals are very proud of. Life here flows in a calm way, with the same traditions and customs that are accepted by the Georgian people.
The alpine village of Khulo is famous not only for its mountain landscapes, but also for its unique cable car without pillars. It is quite long, about two kilometers, and very old for a cable car. She is 30 years old, but in fact the road is very solid and safe. Residents are forced to move from Khulo to Togo in a small cabin, and sometimes crowded with people. And they are not at all afraid of the height of 300 meters above the ground and the length of the road is four kilometers. It is understandable, rains and snowfalls often block other ways to the village and people have no choice but to travel by cable car.
Tourists with a sinking heart ride the cable car and admire the fascinating views around. While the locals are just in a hurry to get to the other side as quickly as possible and they are not at all impressed by the pictures behind the glass of the funicular. Having overcome the path of the cable car, you will get to the young and unstable ski resort of Goderdzi.
Goderdzi Ski Trail
The Goderdzi Ski Resort has recently opened in the Changchahi Mountains. The cableways here are modern, unlike the cable car you got here on. The compact ski run with a length of eight kilometers is designed for any level of skiers.
Here nature is distinguished by very clean, fresh air and elastic snow-white snow. The Ajarian beauty of the mountain slopes is worth visiting.
The Goderdzi Pass is beautiful and unpredictable. Of course, you can choose another road to get to Batumi. She is calm and safe. But then you will miss the opportunity to feel emotions indescribable in words and the opportunity to see the indescribable beauty of the Adjara mountains.
