  • Description

In a quiet corner of Georgian nature, on the slope of a mountain, hides the pearl of the spiritual life of Georgia - the convent of St. John the Theologian. Situated 2.5 km from the square near the customs office in Sarpi, the monastery is accessible to visitors along a picturesque road that covers the path with the beauty of mountain scenery and leads through the residential part of Sarpi.

Founded on the ruins of a 7th-8th century temple, the monastery exudes history and tradition. It was built 15 years ago and continues to develop thanks to the efforts of nuns and the good deeds of benefactors. The restored Orthodox Church invites everyone to take part in services, order a prayer service or magpie, and also support the monastery by any means available.

Keeping alive the memory of the heroic past, Kalendere, which means "Bloody River", is named after the tragic events 400 years ago. At this place, the Ottomans executed 300 Laz, Christian soldiers, whose heads were thrown into the river. In 2003, a mass baptism of representatives of the Laz ethnic group, who acquired the Christian faith, took place here.

The road to the monastery can be a challenge for an inexperienced traveler, especially at night, when wild animals are active. However, during the day the path up the mountain will appear in all its glory, opening up stunning views of the sea and mountains.

The Women's Monastery of St. John the Theologian is not just a place of faith and prayer, but also an amazing corner of nature where everyone will find peace and tranquility. Travelers, seekers of spiritual peace and history buffs should definitely visit this shrine to feel the connection of times and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of unshakable faith and traditions of Georgia.
