Of the church in Zemo Oshora, walls remain on a slope above the Kura valley. There is no roof, the plan reads from the foundation and the surviving masonry, and no later additions were built onto the structure.
Zemo Oshora is part of Aspindza Municipality in Samtskhe-Javakheti. The Kura valley is narrow here, the slopes are dry and stony, and vegetation is sparse. The cave town of Vardzia and Khertvisi fortress are half an hour away, so the ruins fit easily into a route between them.
Keep a restrained manner: for nearby villages this is a place of memory. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Come in the morning while the light is soft.
- Check the forecast, as rain makes the approach slippery.
- Take your litter away with you.
Getting there
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
- Plan the visit together with nearby stops, as there is no dedicated transport here.
