The antiquity repository works on the grounds of the Alaverdi monastery and shows church objects, utensils, vestments and material tied to the history of the monastery. The collection is small, but it offers what the cathedral itself cannot: the chance to look at details up close. It makes sense to go in after you have walked around the church.
The monastery stands on the Alazani plain in the Akhmeta municipality, among vineyards and fields, facing the Caucasus range. The Alaverdi cathedral is one of the tallest medieval churches in Georgia and its silhouette is visible from far away. The grounds are wide, with walls, gates and farm buildings.
The repository is open daily from ten in the morning until six in the evening. Allow half an hour here and about an hour and a half for the whole complex with the cathedral. Keep the monastery rules in mind: covered clothing and a headscarf for women.
Tips
- Dress by the monastery rules or you will not be let in
- Come in the morning, tour groups fill the site during the day
