Matskhovriskari Church is the working Orthodox church of the town of Abasha, also known under a second name, the church of the Nativity of the Saviour. For a small Megrelian district town it is the main religious sight and the natural spiritual centre: people of the town and the nearby villages come here for services, christenings and patronal feasts.
Abasha lies on the Megrelian plain between Samtredia and Senaki, and travellers usually cross it without stopping. The church is a good reason for a short pause that opens up quiet provincial Georgia: still streets, greenery and the measured life of the western lowland.
The visit is free: modest dress and respect for an ongoing service are enough. Inside a working church one keeps quiet and takes photos without flash and not during worship.
