  • Description

The railway station in Zugdidi, built in 1940, is a striking example of Stalinist neoclassicism with a southern, resort touch. The station attracts attention with its architectural features, such as two circular staircases and a semicircular balcony with columns. The building is located on the south side and looks especially nice.

Inside the station retains the atmosphere of old Soviet stations that could be found in the regional centers of Russia in the 1990s. Here you will be greeted by a spacious hall with high ceilings and huge windows, although the interior decoration has suffered over time, and in one of the halls there are traces of fallen plaster.

One of the features of the Zugdidi railway station is the presence of a large number of stray dogs, which are marked with ear tags. Dogs are not aggressive towards people, but can get into fights with each other, especially over food.

The train departing from Zugdidi to Tbilisi (number 869) consists of five cars with a unique, unusual numbering. The cars are significantly worn out and have a specific smell, reminiscent of the atmosphere of Soviet commuter trains.

The railway station in Zugdidi is of interest to lovers of architecture of the Stalinist period, as well as for those who want to plunge into the atmosphere of old Soviet railway stations. Despite the tests of time, this station retains its uniqueness and attracts with its historical charm.
