Архивы выполняют важную роль в политической, экономической, научной и культурной жизни Грузии, сохраняя документальное наследие предков. В древней Грузии, как и в других странах, рукописи хранились и сохранялись авторами, светскими и церковными учреждениями — судом и религиозными центрами. Каждое учреждение нуждалось в юридических стандартах и документах, таких как законодательные акты, бухгалтерские книги, договоры, акты, дипломатическая переписка и другие документы, необходимые для внутренних и международных отношений. Современные архивы страны были сформированы 23 апреля 1920 года на основании закона о создании Центрального научного архива Республики, принятого Демократической Республикой Грузии. Впоследствии, 1 июля 1921 года, революционный комитет Грузии издал декрет о реорганизации архивного дела. С 2004 года архивы находятся под руководством Министерства юстиции Грузии как Государственный департамент архивов.
