  • Description

The Georgian fortress of Rukhi, rising majestically in the Samegrelo region, is an integral part of the rich historical heritage. Built in 1647 by Levan II Dadiani, it became an impregnable fortification of the principality, effectively protecting the territory from Ottoman invasions.

Located in the village of Ruhi, the fortress served not only a military purpose, but also stimulated trade in the region, and also provided a bulwark against Ottoman influence. The history of the castle is steeped in epics and events, such as the siege in 1672, when Prince Levan III Dadiani was able to hold the fortress despite the Ottoman siege.

However, despite the importance of historical events, Ruhi Fortress inevitably faced difficult times. In 1725 it was destroyed by Ottoman troops, but thanks to persistent efforts it was restored. In 1769, during the Russian-Turkish War, General Totleben and the Georgian kings regained control of the fortress, ousting the Ottomans.

The architecturally beautiful Ruhi Castle is an impressive combination of grandeur and loss. With its maximum internal length of 100 meters and width of 80 meters, it includes the lower part in the south and the citadel in the north. The towers guarding the castle, and especially the main tower of the citadel, provide stunning views of the Enguri River and the river basin.

Today, the Rukhi fortress, despite the loss of its military significance at the beginning of the 19th century, invites visitors on a fascinating journey into the past. Four surviving floors and part of the fifth, embrasures, fireplaces and magnificent views make this a wonderful place for history and architecture lovers. Plunging into the spirit of ancient times, visitors will be able to feel the grandeur and inaccessibility of the Rukha fortress, which has witnessed many historical vicissitudes.

A stunning spot to explore, free of charge, offering unparalleled views. I trekked there from Zugdidi, despite passing vans. Freedom to roam, climb, and marvel, with glimpses of Abkhazia just across the way. A serene escape with historical charm – absolutely enchanting.

Vines and moss cling to ancient stone, like a green quilt on Ruins. Spring promises grape harvests straight from the walls. Double-layered walls shield a quiet courtyard—ideal for pitching a tent and cozying up by a campfire. A safe, winding path leads to a citadel with breathtaking valley views. Watch your step, especially post-rain. There's a thrill to the tiny entrance in the main tower, but summer’s growth might need a machete for access. For a true explorer’s hideout, it's a hidden gem.

Wandering through the ancient stones and crumbling walls, you get a tangible sense of history whispered by the winds. This place resonates with an almost mystical energy that lingers in the air, making you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The tranquility of the nearby river adds to the meditation-like ambiance, creating a perfect harmony between nature and remnants of the past. It's a reflective space, perfect for a quiet moment and deep thoughts away from the hustle and bustle. Definitely worth the visit.

Enveloped in verdant foliage, this 17th-century marvel feels like stepping into another era. Despite a few areas needing minor touch-ups, the charm of its stone walls and historic ambiance is undeniable. Just a short distance from Zugdidi, it's the perfect way to spend a lazy weekend. Don’t forget to feed the adorable puppies roaming around; it adds a delightful twist to your visit. Highly recommended!

Perched on the edge of history, I was enveloped by the hushed aura of ancient stones. From up there, every direction reveals a tapestry of breathtaking vistas. My evening in a camper van was serenaded by the peace of the place and the occasional soulful bark of friendly local dogs. Such tranquility and beauty—absolutely recommend! 🌄🕊️

Perched on the edge of enchantment, this timeless haven offers a glimpse into a world of echoes and beauty. The stone walls tell stories of old, while the view from the top is nothing short of magical. Nights spent here, with the gentle lullaby of a nearby river, feel almost otherworldly. Everything is refreshingly clean and well-maintained, making it a perfect retreat for both body and soul.

My experience was far from pleasant. The moment I stepped inside, I was hit with a strong, musty smell that never went away. It felt like no one took care of this place for ages. The atmosphere was supposed to be historic and charming, but I felt more like I was stepping into neglected ruins. No effort seemed to have been made to keep things tidy or welcoming. It left me disappointed and wishing I'd spent my time elsewhere.

The view from the top is otherworldly. Imagine a panorama that makes time stand still. Stepping onto that third floor, I felt like I was floating. The climb is a journey but reaching the summit is like opening a portal to another time, another world. Every stone, every gust of wind tells a story lost in the echoes of history. If you're not afraid of heights and are ready for a bit of a leg workout, this spot gives you a direct ticket to one of the best vistas I've ever experienced.

A peaceful stone relic, embraced by nature's green hues. Encountered a bunch of playful puppies who melted my heart. Bring some treats for them; they'll make your visit unforgettable. Definitely a place where history and charm coexist.

The 17th century fortress, surrounded by greenery, is well preserved, but requires minimal effort to put the place in order. Very close to Zugdidi. Be sure to feed the puppies nearby. I recommend visiting!
