Lake Udziro - the bottomless mountain pearl of Racha
- Description
Lake Udziro is an alpine lake in the Racha region of Georgia, located at an altitude of about 2800 m between the peaks of Katitsvera (~3300 m) and Dolomisi. The name of the lake translates as “bottomless”, which reflects its mystical atmosphere.
The hike to the lake usually starts from the village of Shovi or Glola and takes about two days. The route includes spruce forests, alpine meadows, bizarre rocks and strange mountain forms. The section includes an elevation gain of about 1500–1800 m and requires stamina and experience.
The best time to visit is from early summer (June) to October. The lake freezes in winter, but in summer the water warms up to a comfortable ~10 °C, and spending the night by the lake under the stars becomes unforgettable.
