Gergeti Glacier is an ice sheet on the slope of Mount Kazbek in Georgia
- Description
Gergeti Glacier is a majestic glacier on the southeastern slope of Mount Kazbek (Ortsveri) in Georgia. Its length is approximately 7.1 km, its area is over 11 km², and its tongue descends to an altitude of about 2900 m above sea level.
The glacier is located inside an ancient volcanic caldera, the northern part of which is crowned by the cone of Kazbek, and the southern part by Mount Ortsveri. On the left edge of the glacier there is a meteorological station at an altitude of 3650 m, monitoring the dynamics of the ice and weather conditions.
Trekking to the glacier starts from Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) and takes from 8 to 12 hours with an altitude gain of up to 1600 m. This is a popular route among experienced hikers, although you can start the hike from Gergeti Church to reduce the load.
The wide-ranging views: the majestic ice surface that preserves traces of the geological past, the surrounding landscapes and the architectural image of the Christian church make this hike one of the most exciting in Georgia.
