Kakheti

Kakheti is a wine region where the lion's share of Georgia's grapes grows. It was here that the first seed of cultivated grapes in the world was found, which is 8000 years old. Georgia is rightly considered the birthplace of viticulture and winemaking. In addition to grapes, a variety of fruits such as peaches, apricots and pomegranates are also grown in Kakheti.

Kakheti is a historical region in the east of Georgia, located in the upper reaches of the Iori and Alazani rivers. The main city of the region is Telavi. The name Kakheti comes from the subethnic group of Georgians, the Kakhs. The Kakhetian dialect of the Georgian language is distinguished in the region. This is the main wine-growing region of Georgia and the entire Transcaucasia. Kakheti borders mountainous regions such as Khevsureti, Pshavi and Tusheti to the north, and Azerbaijan to the east and south. You can get to Telavi from Tbilisi through the picturesque Gombor pass, which is the shortest and most convenient route.

Kakheti is a land where history meets natural beauty. Here you can stroll through ancient settlements, visit unique cathedrals and fortresses, and enjoy views of beautiful forests, waterfalls and alpine lakes. Each place maintains its own unique atmosphere, turning Kakheti into a real pearl for travelers. Start your journey from Tbilisi, heading to Sighnaghi or Telavi. If you choose Sighnaghi, first of all visit the winery, where you can enjoy tasting the best Kakhetian wines. Next, take a look at one of the local bakeries to try and, perhaps, bake traditional shoti bread yourself. Be sure to visit Bodbe Monastery to admire its majestic architecture and the surrounding views. End the day with a stroll through the picturesque streets of Sighnaghi, enjoying the local atmosphere and delicious food in the restaurant with panoramic views.

If you choose Telavi, then drive through the Gombor pass, enjoying the views of the mountain scenery. In Telavi, it is worth visiting the Ikalto Academy, Alaverdi Cathedral and the estate of Princes Chavchavadze. Do not miss Kvareli with its historical sights. The return trip through the Gombori pass will give you an unforgettable sunset, ending the day with vivid impressions.

The journey to Kakheti begins at the eastern exit from Tbilisi. Soon after the Lilo Mall shopping center, you will get to the Kakheti highway. If your route lies in Telavi, turn left at the police station and follow through the Gombor pass. If your target is Sighnaghi, keep moving straight ahead. Both roads will give you amazing landscapes and exciting adventures, immersing you in the rich history and culture of Kakheti.
