Chakhedana Church, Adjara, Georgia
- Description
Chakhedan Church is not just a place of worship, it is a historical monument, surprising with its beauty and mystery. Located in the picturesque area of the Adjara region, in the village of Tskhrafona, Kobuleti municipality, it takes us back to the distant past of the events of 1609, when it was erected by Mamiya II Gurieli in memory of his deceased son Manuchar. But the history of this place does not end there.
The church, created to pacify the soul of a lost child, has become a place rich not only in spiritual, but also in material values. Mamiya II Gurieli generously donated crosses, icons, valuable books, golden amphorae, sakkos and weapons to the temple - all this symbolized his deep sorrow and devotion to faith.
The look at the church building amazes with its beauty and austere grandeur. It is made of cut stone and paved with great skill. Its architectural design is impressive: arched windows and relief tiles on the facades give the building a special character, and the double arched cornice only emphasizes its sophistication. The interior of the church, plastered and painted, makes you forget about time and penetrates the soul with its grandeur.
Although time has left its mark on the church, and the current building was erected in the 1990s on the foundations of a destroyed old church, it still continues to bear witness to the grandeur and history of this place. Near Chakhedana there is a paternal monastery, complementing the general atmosphere of spirituality and peace.
A visit to the Chakhedan Church is an opportunity not only to plunge into the history and architecture of Georgia, but also to feel the spirit of faith and repentance that is felt in every stone of this amazing place. For those who value cultural heritage and seek encounters with the past, this place is definitely worth a visit.

Hidden in a quaint Georgian village, a humble sanctuary invited me to pause and reflect. The echoes of ancient prayers mingled with whispers of the past, creating a serene symphony in stone. A strong sense of history envelops you, speaking of an enduring spirit and deep-rooted traditions. Visiting this place is like stepping into a quiet moment suspended in time, where every corner seems to gently tell a story of love and loss.

Stepping into this little sanctuary felt like opening a forgotten chapter of a poignant tale. The air carried whispers of ancient stories and untold sorrow, as if the walls themselves were sharing the heartache of a father’s loss. Sunlight filtered through windows, casting a gentle glow on the artifacts that seemed like silent guardians of the past. There’s a haunting beauty here, where history and emotions are etched in every stone.
