Black Rock Lake is the largest glacial lake in Lagodekhi
- Description
Black Rock Lake is the largest glacial lake in the Lagodekhi Nature Reserve, located at an altitude of about 2800–2900 meters above sea level. It is also called the Long Lake. It is located on the main watershed of the Kavkasioni Range and serves as a natural border between Georgia and Dagestan (Russian Federation).
The lake got its name from the dark volcanic rocks framing its mirror-like surface. This place amazes with its silence, scale and unique nature. From the slope of the lake, breathtaking panoramas of the Alazani Valley and the snow-capped Caucasus Mountains open up.
Around the lake there is an alpine zone with pastures, rhododendrons, soft grass, swamps and traces of ancient glaciation. Wild animals live nearby - chamois, goats, wood grouse, bearded vultures, as well as rare endemics listed in the Red Book. Lagodekhi territory is one of the most endemic in Georgia: there are 121 Caucasian endemics, including 9 rare Georgian species.
Due to the altitude and climate conditions, Black Rock Lake is accessible only in summer and early autumn. This place has no infrastructure and remains absolutely wild: there is no mobile phone coverage, buildings or noise. Only air, wind, water and sky.
