Former station of the Mukhadze-Chavchavadze cable car in Chiatura
- Description
The former station of the Mukhadze-Chavchavadze cable car in Chiatura represents an incredible architectural heritage of the Soviet era. Before renovation in 2021, the system consisted of 10 passenger lines and 2 lines for transporting manganese. Some stations were decorated with murals depicting Soviet heroes, giving the grim aesthetic of the mining town a special historical charm. The total length of the aerial tram system exceeded 6 kilometers, which made it an important element of the region's infrastructure. After decades of heavy use and gradual deterioration of the track and cabins, the transport system was no longer safe and was suspended in 2016. In September 2021, the French company Poma completed a major renovation of the cable car, turning it into a modern and environmentally friendly means of transportation. Today, residents and guests of Chiatura can once again enjoy a bird's-eye view of the city, having the opportunity to travel safely and comfortably along the updated lines. A visit to this updated landmark will be an interesting and educational experience for anyone who wants to touch the unique history and feel the greatness of engineering of the last century.
