Historical regions of Georgia. The Ubisi monastery complex is the most important example of Georgian architecture.
Ubisa is a small monastery complex in Imereti. The history of the monastery begins in the IX century, in the era of the Abkhazian kingdom. To some, the monastery may seem uninteresting and boring, but this is not so at all, Ubis frescoes are a real rarity of the XIV century, only for their sake it is worth visiting this ancient temple.
The Ubisi monastery complex is located in the northeastern part of the village of the same name. The Georgian village of Ubisi, in turn, is located in the historical region of Imereti, in the Kharagauli district, near the town of Zestafoni, or rather 15 km from this administrative center. Sometimes it is called “Ubisa".
The unique samples of the Georgian school of painting preserved in the Ubisi monastery date back to the XIV century. According to the Soviet art critic Shalva Yasonovich Amiranashvili, these unique works belong to the Georgian artist Damian. Ubis frescoes are a real rarity. It is believed that the history of the monastery begins with the IX century. The initiator of the construction of this structure - Grigol Khandzteli organized the search for the necessary funds for construction. And so this incredible temple arose.
The main link of the architectural ensemble is the Church of St. George. This is a tall structure, its extensions are much lower. The Abashidze family tomb and the southern gate are located on the same side of this structure. These two parts of the temple were added to it later. Apart from them, the plan of the temple has a rectangular shape. The church itself is a hall-type building and has extensions on three sides. The chapels located in three parts of the temple: in the west, in the south and in the north - resemble a type of basilica of three churches.
The ancient monastery of Ubisi is considered the most important example of Georgian architecture. This fact attracts people interested in art and in the history of Georgia. Therefore, the monastery complex is very popular among tourists: both local and foreign. Residents of Imereti are proud of this landmark, because it is considered one of the most important places in this area.
