Visit the Potoleti Church in Georgia⬇️
Many of us like to visit the sights, because they preserve the memory of the history of mankind. And every time we choose a place to relax, we look at what you can visit.
So in Georgia you can see the church of Potoleti, which belongs to the oldest historical monuments of Borjomi county. The reason for visiting lies not only in the multifaceted history, but also in the vicinity of the monastery, famous for its beauty.
Location
Potoleti Church is located in Borjomi District, in the Potoleti forest on the plain. A dirt road will lead you straight to the monastery. The distance from Akhaldaba is small. By car you can get to the church in ten minutes, and on foot the road will take more time, about 1.5 hours, but it will give you the opportunity to enjoy all the beauties of the forest, admire the magnificent view of the gorge and Akhalbada.
The most beautiful road to the church is in autumn: the forest becomes colored, and leaf fall adds mystery.
History
There is an opinion that the monastery was built by Christopher, a follower of St. Grigol Khandzteli in the 40s of the IX century. Historical sources indicate that in the XIV century the temple ceases its activities, empties, it is consigned to oblivion. The passage of time or the raids of the enemy led to the destruction of such a wonderful church.
Only in 2007 they started to restore it.
They tried to bring the restoration to the ideal, to bring the appearance of the church as close as possible to the original. In our time, the Church of Potoleti has been restored, a monastery has been restored in it. Now she is one of the examples of living history.
Archaeological discoveries
In order to carry out restoration work and return the original appearance of the temple, there was a need for excavations, during which interesting facts were discovered. Many remains that belonged to the monks were scattered on the territory of the monastery. This restored the picture of what was happening during the raids of the enemies, showed how cruelly the massacre took place.
Dishes and an iconostasis of the 10th century were also found, which was used to decorate the cornice, consisting of tiles with triangular corners. It depicted deer looking directly at each other.
During archaeological excavations, an interesting crypt was found, placed in stone walls, on the roof of which there are illegible inscriptions: Nushuri and Mkhedruli. Various periodical inscriptions are still under study.
