The small church of Lomis is located on a high mountain, built around the 9th-10th century. The material for the construction was unburnt stone. Climbing up the mountain on which the church is located, you can get acquainted with the building itself, as well as view the most beautiful places of Georgia from the bird's-eye view.
Trinity Church of Lomisi is one of the highest altitude churches, located in the historical-geographical region in eastern Georgia, namely in the village of Kavtiskhevi in the municipality of Kaspi. Just because of the beautiful bird's-eye view, many travelers have included this temple in their list of the most beautiful places in Georgia.
Architecture
Georgia's sights are famous for their stone architecture, and the Lomisi Church is no exception. It is a construction of stone and faceted cobblestones, which creates an authentic atmosphere of the early Middle Ages both on the facade of the building and inside it.
The vault of the temple is covered by a casement roof, which is as if supported by several arches decorated with one-stage pilasters with carved stone capitals. The southern facade is also framed by an arch, the base of which is a simple massive capitol-shaped abutment.
On the northern part of the church is a rectangular niche. The middle axis of the ledge receives sunlight from a window in the form of an arch; there are also windows on the north and west sides of the temple. The central icon is the icon of St. George.
The ensemble of the temple consists of three buildings:
- The church itself, next to which the monks of the temple reside.
- Scythian, whose vault and conch were previously destroyed.
- To the west is no less impressive St. George's Church in Kavtishevi.
If you are interested in early medieval architecture and love the superb mountain scenery, Trinity Church of Lomisi will not disappoint you.
