The first mention of the fortress of Kveshi in Bolnisi dates back to the 7th century. In the 12th century, Queen Tamara presented the fortress of Kveshi to Vardani Dadiani.
Kveshi Fortress, a little-known landmark of Georgia, is located 10 km from Bolnisi. The building has a number of interesting architectural solutions and its eventful history. The entrance to the fortress of Kveshi goes through a small tunnel
Kveshi Fortress is a small, but pleasant to the eye and clearly distinguishable fortress about 9 kilometers from the center of Bolnisi. A feature of this fortress is the entrance through a tiny tunnel. The place is not particularly popular among tourists. The fortress is known primarily as the residence of the first Georgian king, who professed Islam in 1569-1578. Location of the fortress: the edge of Kvemo-Kartli, the left bank of the Mashavera river, Bolnisi municipality, near the village of Kveshi.
Kveshi Fortress is a defensive fortress built between the 7th and 9th centuries, was a royal and princely residence.
The first mention of the fortress dates back to the 7th century. At the end of the 12th century, the fortress of Kveshi was at the center of the most important historical events. In the late 80s of that century, the first spouse of Queen Tamara, the Russian Tsarevich George (Yuri) went on a campaign to Ganja and its environs and won. In this campaign, he was accompanied by Vardan Dadiani, one of the respected nobles of that time, who occupied not the last place at the royal court. In gratitude for her loyalty and dedication, the queen presented Vardan with the fortress of Kveshi.
But everything changed dramatically in 1191, when Vardan Dadiani, without hiding, went into opposition and joined Tsarevich George, who had already been expelled by Georgia by that time, and who was going to return what he had lost at any cost. Their plans were not crowned with success and since then the fortress of Kveshi has passed into the possession of the princely family of Mkhargrdzeli.
Since the end of the 15th century, the fortress has been in the possession and under the control of the Baratashvili princes, it was they who were incredibly omnipotent during this period. The fortress of Kveshi continues to be especially significant in the 16th century and becomes the main residence for the Kartli kings. Until the end of the 18th century, it was one of the most important military fortifications to deter the onslaught of enemies approaching this region from the southern side. Since the 19th century, Russian garrisons have been located in the fortress.
At this time, you can get into the fortress through a tunnel in the rock. The walls and reinforcements of the building were erected in the Middle Ages, their length is a total of 220 meters, the height can vary from 1 to 8 meters. The construction of a small church on a mountain in the bowels of the fortress took place in the 18th century, but it is not unknown that it was erected instead of a much older, but at that time no longer existing temple. On the territory of this architectural monument there is a fairly large amount of antiquity. The oldest are steles of about 7-8 centuries, made of stone and decorated with very bizarre patterns in places.
