Ikorta Monastery of the 12th century, one of the sights of Georgia, on the territory of which ancient burials have been preserved.
A large monastery was built on the site of the modern Ikort Cathedral in the Middle Ages. The exact date of construction can be determined by the carved inscription - 1172, which has been preserved on the facade of the temple.
Look for the most beautiful places of Georgia? Then keep in mind that not all of them are in Georgia.
For example, the Ikort temple is located in the Kvemo Kartli region, Gori municipality, namely in the village of Ikorti, which has been part of Russia since 2008.
This monument is already many years old, because the date of foundation is the 12th century.
Then, during the Middle Ages, there was a whole monastery instead of a cathedral, but there is no data about this in the literature. The only thing that can be said is that in the past the owners of the monastery were Eristavov Ksani. Thanks to them, the monastery turned into a fortress. The territory was surrounded by a defensive wall with observation towers to the east. In the west there was a whole citadel. Unfortunately, none of this, except for the ruins of one of the towers, 4-5 meters high, has survived to this day.
But on the facades of the temple there are still inscriptions with the names of local religious figures and the date of construction - 1172.
By the way, the leaders of the Kakheti uprising of 1659 - Bidzina Cholokashvili, Elizbar and Shalva Eristavi - are buried here. They were tortured to death in Iran, and after some time they were secretly transported to the Ikort Cathedral.
It is worth noting that the Ikort temple is important for Georgian architecture: skillful patterns, the highest professionalism of the masters working on the decor. Unfortunately, the frescoes were badly damaged, only small fragments have survived to this day. Moreover, it is one of the cathedrals that became the founder of the traditional Georgian domed church.
The architecture of the Ikort church is cruciform with a main dome.
In the western part there is a vestibule, which was completed later. The inner halls are not simple in their plan. The composition is such that everything rushes to the center, that is, to the dome. This is due to the fact that the main element of the decor is arches. The dome, by the way, has 12 windows, which is symbolic from the point of view of Christianity.
The whole building is rectangular in shape, but there is a semicircular apse in the eastern part. The dome is located above the ledge of the altar and the pylons, which serve as supports.
The light comes inside only due to the windows located in the sleeves, which creates a calm cozy atmosphere inside.
We hope that you have received an answer to the question "what to see in Georgia", while not coming to Georgia.

Жаль, что информации о монастыре не сохранилось, мне бы хотелось больше узнать об этом месте.
