The sights of Georgia, of course, attract the attention of every tourist who has arrived in such a cultural city. This eye-catching cultural complex is located in the northeastern part of Gareja, Kakheti Peninsula.
The founder of this religious place is considered to be David Garejeli. Around the 4th century, the holy father came here from Assyria. At first, the founder of this cultural monument settled in a small cave. After some time, the holy father and his disciple founded a monastery there.
This cave was named after the monk David and became the main one for the entire chain of monasteries located in this place. Only after a certain amount of time all the monasteries were united into one complex, which was named after Gareja.
If we consider in detail the entire complex of this historical monument, we can see that it consists of 11 sanctuaries, as well as the cell of the abbot and the dining room. Only three churches can boast that they are communal, and the rest are cross-domed. Only some of them can boast of the exquisite painting preserved through the centuries: the church at number 5, 6, 7, 8.
The monastery ensemble now represents more than 20 historical monuments in one place at once. These include: the sanctuaries of Tetri Udabno, Pirukugmari, Lavra of David, Berta Mta, Kolagiri, Mount Berta, Gansashori, Berta Ubani, Sabereebi, Desert, Mravaltskaro, Natlis Mtsemeli, Tsintskaro, Chichkhituri, Cave and a few more.
