Mtatsminda Mountain is one of the most beautiful places, it offers a view of the beautiful landscapes of Georgia. For such purposes, several viewing platforms have even been installed here. The largest recreation park in the whole of Georgia operates on the mountain. The pantheon of famous figures of Georgia was located in the courtyard of the Temple of David, and the temple itself was completed only at the end of the nineteenth century.
Mtatsminda Mountain (or Mama Daviti) It is located to the west of the center of Tbilisi, in the form of a spur of the Trialeti ridge, at an altitude of 770 meters above sea level. Mtatsminda is one of the most beautiful natural, historical and cultural attractions of the city. It is covered with coniferous forests and looks proudly at the capital. The difference in height between Mtatsminda and the central part of Tbilisi is almost 400 meters, so it is distinguished by spectacular landscapes and is characterized by great recreational value.
Mtatsminda Mountain offers a view of the whole of Tbilisi. There are several viewing platforms for viewing the panorama of the city. From here you can see the Caucasian Ridge, Kazbek, the Saguramo-Ialno ridge and the Ior Plateau, the Kypa River and the Tbilisi Sea. It is possible to climb Mtatsminda by means of several vehicles, among which the funicular and the cable car are particularly popular.
Mtatsminda currently has the largest recreation park in Georgia. There is also a TV tower here.
Mtatsminda towers over Tbilisi from its western side, and the height of the mountain above sea level is 727 meters, and 330 meters above the Kura embankment. In the middle of the mountain, on one of its slopes, there is the Church of St. David and the pantheon of Georgian writers and public figures. The name of the mountain - Mama-Daviti, as well as the name of the church, is associated with the activities of one of the thirteen Syrian fathers-David of Gareja. In the middle of the VI century, he built a small chapel and cell here. During the Persian invasions, adherents of Zoroastrianism expelled Father David from the city. In the IX century, the Church of the Iverian Mother of God was built here. Therefore, Mount Mama-Daviti received a second name - Mtatsminda (Holy Mountain). Over the years, the church has been damaged. In 1810, on behalf of the Catholicos-Patriarch Anton II, Kashvet priest Thomas Grigoriev built the Church of the Transfiguration with donations from Tbilisi residents. In 1859, the son of Thomas Grigoriev, Joseph, again, thanks to the financial assistance of the population, began to build a new, larger cathedral named after St. David of Gareja. Construction was completed only in 1877. In 1889, the walls of the cathedral were painted. The dimensions of today's cathedral: height (together with the cross) 25.7 meters, length - 17.2 m, width - 10.7 m.
In 1929, a pantheon of Georgian writers and public figures was established in the courtyard of the cathedral, where the greatest sons of Georgia are buried, including: Ilya Chavchavadze, Akaki Tsereteli, Vazha Pshavela, Galaktion Tabidze, the first president of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia. The pantheon also contains: the famous Russian writer and playwright Alexander Griboyedov, the mother of Joseph Stalin.
