Mestia, where about 3,000 people live, is a real cultural and tourist center of mountainous Svaneti. The village is located at an altitude of 1500 meters, on the southern slope of the Great Caucasian Ridge. Zugdidi, the nearest town to Mestia, is 128 km away.
Svaneti is a peculiar region in Georgia, even the language is a little different here. It so happened that there were no major military operations in this territory, the change of epochs and rulers also had little effect on local culture and traditions.
