The fortresses of Kakheti - Kvetari, a fortress complex of the 8th century Kuyeteri - one of the most beautiful places in Georgia.
Kvetari fortress is located near the town of Ahmet, which can be reached via the Tianeti highway. The first mention of the fortress dates back to the 2nd century. There is evidence of the citadel Kvetari in documents of the 8th and 10th century.
In the picturesque region of Georgia, Kateghia, famous for its vineyards and valleys, is the stone fortress of Kvereta. It was built in the early Middle Ages and there is something to see in Georgia for even the most fastidious traveler.
To see the fortress you have to go to the town Akhmeta and from there follow the Tianeti highway along the left bank of the Ilto river for 12 kilometers.
The architectural complex of Kuetheri includes a central castle, a palace next to it, and along the perimeter there are signal towers and a fortress, which limits the whole territory. In the courtyard of the complex there are also several churches, one of which is domed. Because of its location - the building rises above the whole city - it offers an amazing panorama of the most beautiful places of Georgia.
The first mention of the city-fortress dates back to the 2nd century, when the Georgian people ruled Kvirike III, also some sources mention the fortress in the 8th and 11th centuries. Such a wide range in dates could indicate that the fortress was repeatedly destroyed by invaders and restored.
In its time Kakheti fortress Kvetari was a center of the whole principality, monarchs lived here, important meetings were held and important decisions of the whole region were made. Traces of urban life can be traced back to the 13th century.
In the second half of the 20th century, in 1968, archaeological excavations were organized on the territory of the fortress town Kvetari. As a result of this work household items, utensils and jewelry were found, which can be seen in the Archaeological Museum of Dusheti. The most interesting find was the ruins of a medieval church.
The sights of Georgia are respected and protected not only within the country but also internationally in order to preserve the cultural heritage for the descendants. In October 2007, the fortress was included in the UNESCO list.
History
Due to its favorable location the fortress became the center of the Kakheti principality. King Kvirike III divided the whole territory of medieval Kakheti into seven parts. One of which was Saeritavo Kvereta.
The fortress was an excellent protection and barrier to enemies, to conquer it was quite difficult, this is confirmed by the fact that during his aggressive campaign Bagrat IV could not take the fortress, although he was conquered almost all Kakheti Ereti.
