In Kvemo Kartli region there are many iconic sights of Georgia. One of them is the Partskhisi fortress.
The exact age of Partskhisi fortress located in Kvemo Kartli archaeologists have not been able to determine. This has not stopped it from being an interesting sightseeing place in Georgia. The original version of the fortress had four floors
Partskhisi Fortress is located on the slopes of the eastern region of Kvemo Kartli, this historical region is famous for being the most beautiful places in Georgia, you can be sure of that when you visit the picturesque medieval fortress.
From the high hill at the foot of the banks of the river Algeri offers a view of the panorama of the nearby settlement and the colorful nature.
According to historical data, the exact date of construction can not be determined, but some sources first mention Partskhisi, when the territory of Georgia was ruled by King Bagrat IV. Time of his reign begins in 1027 AD, therefore, the defense structure was built much earlier than this period.
The specific location on a clearly visible area suggests that the main purpose of the construction was not to defend against enemies, but to establish trade relations between settlements, as the fortress is located just at the crossroads of Kvemo Kartli - one of the main trade routes of the time. Other buildings such as Birtvisi and Orbeti fortresses are clearly visible from the top of the fortress and if you climb to the highest point you can recognize the outlines of Kojori.
Given the antiquity of its construction and the particular elegance with which this fortress is made, it is not only of historical interest, but also of cultural, there is something to see here in Georgia, especially those interested in medieval castles, fortresses and the inspiring landscapes of the green valley of the Kvemo Kartli region.
At present, the fortress is not completely preserved, it has crumbled in some places, and the plan of the most ancient buildings on the territory of Partskhisi cannot be guessed precisely even by experienced Georgian archaeologists.
Due to its rich history Georgian sights often become the object of close attention of historians and archaeologists. During excavations on the territory of the fortress two wings of the castle were discovered. Thanks to the painstaking work they managed to find out that originally there was a central citadel around the construction, around which the castle wall spiraled.
To get inside it is possible through the wide arched gate in the north, they are made of brick and stone. The material for the construction of the entire complex was cut cobblestone and hewn stone.
Originally, the fortress was a structure consisting of four floors, and under the ground floor there was a tunnel for quick retreat of the inhabitants of the old fortress. Today, it is difficult to imagine such a scale, as only the ruins of the first two floors and some parts of the fortress wall remain.
