A walk through the architectural sights of Tbilisi⬇️

content

To say that Georgia is generous with sights is to say nothing. In the very center, in Tbilisi — there is a sufficient number of architectural objects that arouse the interest of people, both from Russia and from around the world.

Here you can find both buildings of historical heritage and modern, futuristic-looking structures. From buildings whose history goes back centuries, to striking tourists with their idea of the cities of the future. In this article we will tell you about the brightest and most memorable representatives of the construction art of this magnificent city.

Take a look at the House of Justice on Zviada Gamsakhurdia Street

We will tell you about the building, whose activities are designed to simplify the life of the local and not only the population. It is located on the banks of the picturesque Kura River, not far from the Peace Bridge. This is a branch of the House of Justice, Tbilisi — from the outside it resembles a mycelium, from the inside it is more like an anthill. Where, despite the daily influx of a large number of visitors, all of the services provided are solved quickly and without confusion.

The construction was carried out under the direction of the famous Italian architect — Massimiliano Fuchsas. And it ended in the two thousand and eleventh year. And already in the next year, the company received an award from the international United Nations — in the nomination for improving the provision of necessary public services.

The exterior decoration is created in the style of modern art — on the one hand it is minimalistic, only metal, concrete and glass are made of materials. On the other — the bizarre shape of the roof, which can be observed from any high-rise building in the capital. Locals are very proud not only of the visual component, but also of the quality of service.

Inside, everything is calculated for reasons of versatility — because of the wide range of services, of which there are more than three hundred. There is a variety of services that want to solve their own problems, too. It was decided to divide the territory into three sectors. The first is a self—service area, the second is fast, where the service lasts on average a couple of minutes. And finally, the third — where the duration of the process takes more than five.

As it is clear from the listed time periods — the level of service provided is so well coordinated that you can get any document in one day. The procedure is such that after processing the request from the client, he is informed in an SMS when and in which window he can pick up the missing documents.

It is also necessary to see the Avlabar residence — the presidential palace

It is also necessary to see the Avlabar residence — the presidential palace

It is located, towering over the city, along the main river of the country, the Kura, built also, during the reign of Mikhail Saakashvili. The style can be attributed rather to the classical, but with elements of neoclassicism. Currently, it is not the residence of the head of the country, but it is heavily guarded. Despite the presence of vigilant security, you can purchase a tour of the halls by ordering through a professional travel agency in advance — it is better to specify the timing of the current moment.

In total, its construction took five years and was not always stable. In particular, due to the fact that Georgy Iraklievich Batiashvili, a famous Soviet architect, began the work, and the Italian Michele De Lucchi completed it. Everyone has brought something of their own to the design, so it is not possible to accurately determine the style.

Due to the chosen territorial point, the palace can be observed from almost any corner of Tbilisi. This is one of its main features, and has become the subject of jokes by local residents. That the president needs to monitor his possessions around the clock.

In its appearance, it reminds many of the White House on the Capitol Hills of Washington. With a similar massive glass dome in the center of the building and columns framing the main entrance.

Next, we will talk about the Georgian Parliament building on Shota Rustaveli Avenue

Next, we will talk about the Georgian Parliament building on Shota Rustaveli Avenue

Unlike the palace of the former president, this landmark of Georgia has a much more important and deep historical significance. Or rather, the very terrain on which this building is built. Its history goes back centuries and has a much more significant historical significance than the previous objects of tourist interest. The countdown has been going on since the twelfth century, and has a hereditary cultural value for Georgians.

It is necessary to visit here with a professional guide — since only he will be able to tell the maximum about the formation of parliamentarism of this state, since the twelfth century. About what the people of Georgia had to face, what metamorphoses the country has been going through since the time of Queen Tamara.

The building itself was built here under Soviet rule in the middle of the twentieth century. In the past decades, there have also been cataclysms. It is the same in our time — the parliament has only recently returned back to the capital of the country from Kutaisi, where it was moved on the instructions of the former president.

If we talk about architecture, the building looks very impressive and solid —

you can immediately see the Soviet school with notes of Georgian national flavor. Majestic columns combined with nearby fountains create a unique atmosphere. A special, literally fundamental charm can be seen at night, when the building is illuminated from the inside.

Visit to the Music and Drama theater and exhibition hall in Rike Park

Just like the House of Justice in Tbilisi, the building in Rike Park is a project of the Italian architect Massimiliano Fuchsas. And similarly, it has a super-modern, somewhat controversial look. Until recently, there were periodic disputes among politicians and the public about the appropriateness of such futuristic buildings.

At the moment, the disputes have subsided, the residents are used to it, and tourists frankly like it. Moreover, the adjacent territory was landscaped and ennobled.

The park itself is located in the old city center. Here you can admire not only the views of the buildings of the future, but also spend time with children, in a quiet cozy family circle. The park has everything you need for this.

Trip to St. David's Church, Mtatsminda Mountain

Trip to St. David's Church, Mtatsminda Mountain

Talking about this mystical place, it is impossible not to mention its history right away. It originates in the sixth century AD, when, according to legend, an ascetic, David of Gareja, settled in these parts. It is believed that he is one of those who brought the Christian faith to Georgia. In memory of him, not only this church was built, but also a monastery in the village of Akura.

It is worth mentioning the interior decoration and the atmosphere of the room itself. As in any holy place — there is a uniquely calm, peaceful, healing atmosphere. There are ancient mosaic icons, a prayer service. In the chapel you can see the holy spring and drink water from it.

If there is a desire to learn more about the stories of these places, then you can contact the priest or hire a guide. And from Mtatsminda Mountain, enjoy the panorama of the whole of Tbilisi.

In this case, the architectural style is absolutely clear and it is called by the beautiful word brutalism. However, this term was not always used — in the Soviet Union it was called Soviet modernism. One way or another, but this original design can be observed on the banks of the Kura River when leaving Tbilisi, Georgia.

It is a curious fact that the building was built in the seventy-fifth year, and already in the eighty-first, the builders, together with the designers who took part in the creation of this structure, received an award from the Council of Ministers of the USSR. Even later, already in the two thousand seventh, the building was recognized as a national monument of architecture.

The very idea of such a design comes, oddly enough, from the principles of harmony between man and nature. In order for buildings to capture as little ground space as possible, they existed vertically. Thus, the area of the foundation adjacent to the ground is smaller, and the opportunities for the development of flora are greater. Such a construction plan disturbs plants and shrubs to a much lesser extent. Initially, this idea was inspired by the analogy with trees, the crown of which occupies much more space than the trunk.

Currently, this unusual house is fully functioning and occupied by the Bank of Georgia.

Walk to the Museum of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts named after Apollon Kutateladze

Walk to the Museum of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts named after Apollon Kutateladze

The next interesting place I would like to tell you about is the educational institution named after Apollon Karamanovich Kutateladze. The history of the establishment of this educational institution begins at about the same time as the Georgian Parliament building, that is, at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The recognized Soviet painter of Georgian origin is known not only for his canvases, but also for being an ardent defender of the aforementioned academy. He managed the seemingly impossible — not only not to allow the educational institution to be deprived of its status, but even to expand it. The memory of his personality remained as a person with unique diplomatic and organizational abilities. He opened new faculties and always adequately defended the rights of his University.

Nowadays, the academy not only successfully trains more and more new generations of students. But they also enjoy conducting excursions. In the process, you can not only admire works of art, some of which are hundreds of years old. But also to learn a little more about the period of the formation of the academy, the troubled times preceding our relatively quiet days.

Art lovers will definitely not be left indifferent by going to this institution.

London Palace Hotel

London Palace Hotel

Another attraction of Tbilisi, Georgia is definitely called the once famous London Hotel.

Its history begins at the end of the nineteenth century, as the most popular institution for the bohemian and intellectual elite. Such outstanding cultural figures as the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and the writer Maxim Gorky, beloved by many, enjoyed their holidays in those walls.

Later, the Zubalashvili family, the rightful owners of the building, had to leave their homeland and immigrate. Nevertheless, the brothers are still remembered, one of the central streets of Tbilisi is named after them. And the buildings that they built are still standing.

As for the once most popular London hotel itself, the building has not been used as a hotel since the first half of the twentieth century.

Over the years, the legacy of the brothers has experienced a lot. And now, as far as possible, it is an ordinary residential building. With its unique architecture, wooden stairs and carved railings.

You can visit this house in the daytime. Perhaps the people living in it will tell even more entertaining.

The Mysterious History of the Red Gospel Church

The Mysterious History of the Red Gospel Church

One of the most mysterious sights of Tbilisi, or even the whole of Georgia, is considered to be the Karmir Avetaran Church, or rather the remaining ruins. Discrepancies begin already at the construction stage. According to some sources, the construction was carried out in the eighteenth century, according to others only in the nineteenth.

Shamkhor Armenians, who fled from their lands from the threat of the Turks, were engaged in its construction at the beginning of the eighteenth century. There is evidence that the height reached forty meters, which was a record for buildings of this kind built by Armenians. What happened to the cathedral in the interval up to the present day is not known for certain.

One thing is clear — the destruction occurred at the end of the twentieth century and, unfortunately, there are no plans to restore it in the foreseeable future. But even the ruins of the temple show how majestic this building was.

Excursion to the Vorontsov Palace on Shota Rustaveli Avenue

Excursion to the Vorontsov Palace on Shota Rustaveli Avenue

Venerable travelers who already have few classic tourist destinations consider this palace an underestimated landmark of Tbilisi, Georgia. It is not often mentioned in advertising brochures, and if they write, it is casually, without emphasizing attention. But in vain.

The first Constitution of Georgia, the fundamental document of any country, was approved and adopted in this building.

When walking with a guide through many different halls — mirrored, marble, white, visiting the parliamentary department and the Museum of Archaeology — to learn a lot. And not only about the palace and the events that often decide the fate of the people, but also about individual historical figures. In the tsarist era, when Count Mikhail Vorontsov owned these walls, Alexander Griboyedov, a Russian poet, playwright and diplomat, often visited here. Here his marriage to Nina Chavchavadze was celebrated on a large scale, which was attended by representatives of the aristocracy and cultural figures of that time.

Whatever one may say, but every era is coming to an end. And it is appreciated when it is possible to preserve the maximum of the rarities of the past in the present, which is what the servants of the palace did. Therefore, those who have visited this place do not remain indifferent to such an atmospheric, chamber journey into the past.
