GAGRA RESORT
The territory of today's resort has been inhabited since ancient times. Even 20,000 years ago the valley of the Ciocerva River was inhabited by primitive people. In the II century BC Greek colonists founded here a small trading colony Triglit. The main part of the population were Colchis and Greeks who traded first with Greek, and then with the Genoese and Venetian merchants, selling them products of local manufacture - wood, wool, honey and beeswax. The existence of the city in subsequent centuries is evidenced by a monument of early Christian Georgian architecture - Gagri basilica (VI-VII centuries). This monument is one of the oldest samples among three-nave basilicas widespread in Georgia.
Prince of Oldenburg made a great contribution to the formation of Gagra as a resort of the Russian imperial family. His plan was to make Gagra a resort for the higher nobility - the Russian "Nice". By his order, the coastal park was laid out, beautiful palaces, a hotel and restaurant "Gagripshi" were built. This restaurant even today is a symbol of the resort. On January 9, 1903 the Prince opened the climatic station. This event was celebrated in the restaurant "Gagrpshi" built by him. This day is considered the day of foundation of the resort.
