Duruji is fed by snow and rainwater. Mudflows often occur here, during which large masses of hard mud come down from the mountains in an avalanche. During one such catastrophic mudflow in 1899, the Durudzhi River carried a huge boulder from its source to Kvareli town, dragging it about 6-8 kilometers. This shattered sandstone boulder is still located near Kvareli. It is 5,8x4,2x4 meters in size and weighs 224 tons.
Though, the sand and silt brought by the river have high stickiness and are used for production of cement, wall blocks and other building materials. In 5 kilometers to the east of Kvareli, a reservoir called "Ilia Lake", named after the great Georgian writer and public figure Ilia Chavchavadze, was created by flooding Duruji.
The lake is an entertainment and health center. On one side it is surrounded by low mountains covered with deciduous forests, and on the other side there is a park with entertainment and playgrounds and a magnificent amphitheater; along the shoreline there is a boulevard with cafes and restaurants.
