During the Soviet period in Chakvi several rest houses functioned. The Research Institute of Tea and Subtropical Cultures carried out intensive work on the creation of new varieties of tea. Of the currently well-known Georgian tea varieties (more than 20 names), several of them - "Green Tea 95", "Bouquet of Georgia", as well as "Georgian I", "Georgian II" were brought out by employees of this institute.
Tea appeared in Georgia, presumably, in the second half of the XVIII century, when the Russian Empress Catherine II sent a Chinese tea set and tea leaves as a gift to the King of Kartli-Kakheti Irakli II. And the wide spread of tea culture in our country is associated with the name of Mikhail Kaikhosrovich Eristavi. At the end of the nineteenth century, the Gurian prince traveled to China, tried tea leaves there. He liked this drink so much that he decided to grow tea in Georgia. But it was strictly forbidden to export tea seeds or its seedlings from China. The prince had to put tea seeds in the tip of a cane and so smuggle them across the border. It is difficult to say whether this is true or fiction, but it is a fact that the prince began to cultivate tea in his estate, in Ozurgeti, and tried to make this culture take root on Georgian soil.
After the establishment of Soviet power, in the 20s of the twentieth century, in order to develop tea growing in Georgia, a state program was developed, according to which the leading role in this issue was assigned to the Research Institute of Tea and Subtropical Cultures in Chakvi. Dozens of tea factories were built throughout Georgia. Tea growing has become the leading branch of agriculture in the western regions of Georgia -Samegrelo, Guria, Adjara and Imereti. It is known that in the 60-70s of the twentieth century, 95 thousand tons of tea were produced in Georgia per year.

Dozens of tea factories were built in different regions of Georgia, such as Samegrelo, Guria, Adjara and Imereti. Tea growing became the leading branch of agriculture in Georgia's western regions. From the 1960s to the 1970s, Georgia produced about 95,000 tons of tea annually.
