High cliffs in Georgia. What natural sights are worth seeing. The Katsakhi Pillar.
Katsakhi is a natural pillar of limestone, which was formed due to shifts of tectonic rocks. The shapes of Katsakhi are so perfect that from the outside it might seem to have been made by human hands. The height of the pillar is about forty meters. Because of the washout of the limestone pillars, it is considered difficult to reach.
The ancient village of Katskhi is located in Zemo Imereti and is distinguished by its beauty and rich historical past. The name "Katsakhi" comes from a Slavic word and means peak. The geographical location of the village confirms this name. And flint implements, bronze items and other items found during archaeological excavations indicate that the village has been inhabited since ancient times.
On the territory of Katskha stands a natural limestone pillar - a limestone monolith formed as a result of tectonic shifts, in the language of geologists - a sedimentary "witness" of denudation processes. Denudation (Latin word, means "exposure") - a set of processes of drift and transport of products of decomposition of rocks under the influence of rainfall and wind.
Some natural forms formed as a result of denudation have such a perfect structure that they appear to be the work of human hands. This is exactly what the Katskha Pillar is, which is included in the Red Book as a unique natural monument. The pillar is about 40-45 m high, and its upper area is about 150 m. The pillar is mostly elongated upwards, although there are several terraces in some parts of its upper part. The lower part has been subjected to limestone washout, so the foot of the pillar is narrower than its upper part. This factor gives the pillar a slope and makes it even more difficult to reach.
During the early Middle Ages there was a hermitage here. On the upper platform of the pillar stands a small church.
Not far from the Katskha Pillar, in the Kahura River basin, there are several karst caves: Katskha I, Katskha II, Chalisklde, Horboulisklde. The Chalisklde well is also located in this area.
