Colchis accumulative plain lowland It is located in Western Georgia at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level. It has the shape of a triangle, the base of which rests on the coastal strip of the Black Sea.
The Colchis lowland was once a sea bay, which was filled in the Quaternary period with river material here. The eastern part of the lowland is subject to flooding, which leads to frequent flooding and waterlogging.
The Colchis lowland has a slight slope, which is why the rivers here are slow. They form meanders, which contributes to the appearance of drainless lakes. There are swamps near the Black Sea, which are on the migration route of migratory birds.
In the Colchis lowland, both wet (blowing from the west) and dry (from the east) winds replace each other. Easterly winds contribute to the evaporation of excessive moisture and high yields, but at the same time, because of them, in summer there is excessively hot and stuffy weather, which sometimes causes drought and, as a result, crop destruction.
A person has settled in the Colchian lowland since ancient times and was engaged in farming. The oldest Greek colonies were located here. The legend of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece is connected with the Colchian lowland. Currently, the lowland is densely populated (150-200 people per km2) and almost completely developed. The natural environment here has been preserved only in protected areas and areas with high humidity.
